Monohulls, catamarans and trimarans are now all proven designs with pros and cons.
There are a lot of variations in these designs and they are still, after all these years evolving.
The issue that really muddies the water is that IMHO 95% of boats in the world are either poorly designed, poorly built, in a dilapidated state or all three.
Understandably few of us want to admit that our pride and joy falls into any of those categories.
Modern standards like ISO 9001 are starting to address the design and build quality issues but they will never prevent poor maintenance and operator error.
At the end of the day there are some excellent boats out there in all three design categories but a lot of dogs.
Judge and choose the best design and model for your needs and you will never have to argue that your boat is best because you know it is.
I agree!

Only now does it fully register. Have been following fastcat's progress and am beginning to become convinced that double digit figures will be a good substitute for the 'lack of' heel and the 'real' feeling of sailing.

SailFastTri "However there are many cats and tris with deeper centerboards and daggerboards, and performance sail configurations with barberhaul sheet controls"
Please explain how this can be worked into my old boat. I'm aware of the problem but have had one good long run at thirty apparent. I'd put it down to a freak of inexperienced sail trimming but I sure would like to repeat it regularly.
The slamming isn't a problem with the Prout centre nacelle that turns a slam into a more prolonged slowing, not so vicious and now another useful cool storage space after replacing the floor and adding access. I've also added a false step between the two hulls making cabin entry much easier and providing grab bag storage just inside the doorway.
The boat is 31ft by 14ft, much narrow than modern charter builds. I wonder just how they do manage to package decent sailing systems into such a broad plan. (Perhaps they don't try very hard?)
It is a little disconcerting to be passed by so many mono's but the quick ones are cramped or have crew sat at a railing with no weather protection while we sip coffee in the cockpit. Has anyone tried moving water ballast in a Cat to keep the mast upright? With the extra beam it will be extra effective without degrading safety significantly.
Weekend so fasr washed out by rain and light winds forecast tho' Bramblemet shows f5/f6 today but a north wind and a lot of chill damp and plain wetness in the air.

This video demonstrates once again why a Jordan drogue should be standard equipment on any blue water cat.

IMHO, 18 knots on bares poles is irresponsible. Yet both the crew and the boat took it, and they arrived safely.

Great video. Maybe some drag would have been a safer ride, even mooring lines trailed will help. Just not lifting our drive leg takes a knot off 5 knots. It all helps, mainly in stability.
However, you and the boat seemed to be doing fine, no great stress, no breakages, both keeping watch and no sea-sickness. (Were you on tablets or just lucky).
Surfing is an odd out of control feeling to start with, did you become more comfortable with it? You seemed to be running pretty much down wind, I'd have dropped the main and used the genny more, or my storm staysail.
Not a criticism in any way, just trying to learn all I can.
On my slow boat we saw 14kts surfing in past the Needles lighthouse. A great feeling, that was under full sail and I should have dropped/reefed the main for better directional stability. She was yawing all the while, taking full rudder to hold her on course until we ran into lighter swell. Still learning, still enjoying it.

He mentions 18 feet and breaking.

And yes every cruising multi has at least one buddy boat, cause we have friends. What an odd thing to say. what on earth does doing a passage in company have to do with how many hulls you have.

The video is very good. I especially like how calm the couple appears. Might be nice to know how they feel about it now.

Factor, you're just a damned sales agent trying to sell more catamarans that are too expensive to begin with. [Relax, folks, Factor and Mike are friends. - TaoJones]

Fair Winds,
Mike

I'm a "lurker", and don't often feel I have much to contribute or say, but just wanted to say - nice video ! Agree with Tropic Cat's comment about drogues though.

The waves in the video do not look all that big regardless of boat that was my point. If they were then I must have underestimated the size of waves I have sailed through aboard a mono without a problem?

Well in addittion to having friends cat sailors tell porkies. Thats your answer.

FFS - if you think he is bullsh1tting tell him. I think I have seen this boat in Moreton bay recently so he is not too far from you.

You know .... I'm afraid I'm really getting lost as to the point you are trying to make in this thread.

Are you saying that monos are safer boats? Ask Sandy on here, He is retired from the NTSB and will tell you that monos are not safer, nor are cats... there is little difference in the data.

Are you saying that you can do without the extra room on a cat? Or that you can do without sailing flat or being a bit quicker? Then for God's sake, don't buy one.

If you're saying that your boat is better than mine ... then I would agree with you, in that for your style of sailing, it probably is. No argument.

However, are you trying to convince the folks who own a Cat to sell their boats and buy a mono? Not going to happen ... Or convince folks considering a Cat, not to buy one? On what basis?

If I've missed the point of your posts, please straighten me out, but for the life of me I've seen no facts from you. It's all been opinions from a guy who obviously has never spent time on a cruising cat and clearly admits he can't be objective.. yet purposely enters the multihull area of this forum to "stir the pot" for reasons I certainly can't figure out, but would love to learn.

Without a problem? If you can't work out that waves look smaller on a 14" computer screen, I'd say you have some real problems...

But hey, why don't you go visit the guy and tell him he's a liar, and how you've sailed through MUCH bigger waves, becuse your mono is so much better than his cat?

Maybe buzz him a few times on your jetski just to prove your point?

Then come back here and post drivel a few hundred more times in the MULTIHULL forum.
