Not really a caste system but there is some snobbery in sailing. I see a little bit of it in here on occasion...therefore this is one of the reasons for our Be Nice rule. Everyone should feel welcome.

Speaking for me only I have no interest in marina slips or yacht club berths or docks as a place to keep my boat. I avoid them as much as possible preferring to be anchored or on a mooring which I have built to spec.

Marinas are looking for your money and ways to get as much of it as they can. If you are not perceived as a revenue stream they don't want you. Unfortunately apparently some people must use a marina to store there boat. Too bad. You're trapped.

Yacht clubs are social clubs and come with all sorts of activities and percs.. if that is what you want. I don't.

In winter marinas look for in water storage customers... they rent cheap.

In the US, the "yacht" snobbery has been implanted in many of us from childhood.

I still remember the Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd cartoon with the line:

"I am Elmer J. Fudd, millionaire. I own a mansion and a yacht."

Funny what being wealthy can do to some peoples self-image of being superior. Money does not make you a better person, you do that for yourself mostly by your good deeds and how well you treat others. In the end this is how people will remember you.

What boat someone has or how they talk has nothing to do with it..
I don't envy anyone their boat.. don't really have a dream boat...

We get on... Great.!! 2 friends..

We don't... Great..!! just another coupla a$$^oles..

But... we're no longer strangers...

Not just money, but other titles too.

Someone with a Doctorate will have higher social regard than a plumber.
In people's minds, a Ph.D. equates with intelligence, a plumber brings the visualization of "plumber's crack." The plumber will usually make more money than a college professor.

In other circles, a person with a hereditary title will have more people fawning over them than a billionaire investor, even though the person with the title will be deep in debt.

At the age of 65 while spending my fourth hurricane season in Trinidad, a fellow cruiser asked me which college I'd graduated from.

So yes, for some the caste system is important.

Of course there are snobs.. The daily problems of the wealthy are very different from regular folks. As long as one does not incorrectly assume that a middle class person has something in common with wealth you will not be miss apprehended. That said I have found folks who earned their wealth to often be smarter than the average bear.

I sometimes get looks from some folks when I show up to do a dirty job dressed appropriately for the job. Those who prefer to write checks are different from those who prefer to master a task.

Reminds me of the plumber working on an attorney's bathroom in a New York apartment.

The attorney says to the plumber, "How much are you charging me for this work?"

The plumber says, "I charge $800 buck an hour!"

The attorney muses, "My God, I should be plumber too!"

The plumber responds, "Yea I know what you mean, I used to be an attorney myself."

In so far as our social caste system extends out onto the water the point is valid. However, there are limits. I was out in a good 35 to 40 knot blow in April ripping along at 8 knots watching the 60 ft sleds glide by at 14 knots. A crew in a 30 foot racer had an accidental jibe, broached and got knocked down repeatedly till they could cut the chute loose. All of the vessels out there were equally concerned that every one onboard had remained onboard and there were no injuries. There were no problems other than embarrassment, thankfully. So we all sailed on, waving goodbye to the uber Caste sleds as the pulled away.
