No, you pretty much nailed it. A cow died and bloated into a balloon. They pushed it to the beach and towed it a mile or so offshore and let it float free in the current and trade winds. Stunk really bad as they towed it past us.

Hard to explain to your insurance that you hit a cow at sea.

Not every boat has AIS, so I dont consider it a safe vessel even with lights. During the day, if someone hit it, its thier own fault. But at night its damn dangerous. For the safety of others, it would be worth while scuttling it one came across it.

I'd be interested in seeing the shape of the cartridge case. I'd also be interested in seeing it shot side by side with a .375 State.

Just punching a few quick numbers into a calculator, I think that 16" @ 1.3 miles is more like .7 MOA, not .25. I'll have to check my math. I'm just remembering the formula off the top of my head. I've been away from that stuff for a long time now. I may be a little fuzzy on the details.

Most people aren't figuring their stats at 1.3 miles. They zero and often read .25 MOA or less at 1000 yds or less. Very low recoil, well suppressed. 419 grain copper-nickel slug puts big holes in things like engines.

Slow twist barrels like the 1:13 on that rifle often exhibit trajectories with progressively shrinking radius of spiral. They often get better moa at increased distance if the ambient winds aren't too bad. This flies in the face of the Greenhill equation, but it's a documented phenomenon, especially with long pointy projectiles that have high ballistic coefficients.

Personally, I'm a short range guy. I've taken few shots that were much over 300 yards. I only got into dealing with the long range stuff for a little while when I was involved with a prototyping project several years ago. I find it interesting from an academic perspective, but I really don't fool with it much myself.

The .375 state was probably pretty close to what you have there. It was basically a BMG that was necked down to 3/8". It used a solid gilding metal projectile. When you get into those kinds of pressures, not much else resists excessive deformation, even with modern slow-burning powders.
