Eastern Caribbean storage.

How far south do you need to sail to find a place to haul your boat for Hurricane season?

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

According to insurance companies, Grenada and Trinidad are safe enough from hurricanes.

I don't care about insurance. I was hoping for something near Puerto Rico. Maybe a yard that has holes in the ground for the keel.

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

You can leave it anywhere you want. Any north of Grenada and you have an increased risk of being hit by a hurricane. You can leave it in PR, many people do, but then you need to be asking a different question - like, what is a good competent yard to keep my boat in the hurricane zone.

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

A friend of mine has kept his boat for many years, year-round, at Jolly Harbour Marina - Antigua, and they do exactly as you describe: digging a hole, surrounding it with tires, and setting the boat on the tires.

He is highly complementary of this this marina.

For what it's worth.

Pic attached.

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

We hauled one season in Phillipsburg, St Martin. Check out St. Kitts for hole in the ground storage, possibly at better rates.

Independent Boat Yard on St. Thomas, Spanish Town Virgin Gorda, and Nanny Cay Tórtola all do hurricane haul/ Storage. IBY sets the boats like in a sardine can (very close) both VG and Tórtola have holes if you want. St. Martin does too.

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

Thanks. Sounds like there is nothing before the Virgin Islands. I would really like to haul out further up but the boat needs to be secure too. Pretty much a crap shoot unless the boat is in the ground I think.

You can haul your boat in Ponce PR, and San Juan, but I'm not familiar what they have for hurricane storage.

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

Are there bugs on the ground? I know it is a good way to protect from wind but what other problems do bugs cause?

What about snakes, rats, mold and the bugs?

Re: Eastern Caribbean storage.

You guys are funny. I guess you haul your boat at a yard where it sits on concrete or blacktop?? I've never seen a yard where the boats are not sitting on Jacks in the dirt, so what difference would sitting on Jacks in a hole make?? I'd like to see one of these concrete yards.

If you want to be in Puerto Rico, then these yards should be of interest:

Puerto del Rey
Varadero @ Palmas del Mar, Humacao, Puerto Rico
