Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

it always amazes me how fit and good looking sailors are when comparing to rest of population of similar age.

We all have to remember, sea can take our lives anytime no matter how well our boat is setup. Thats the risk in this game.

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

I can't imagine a keel falling off either of our boats.

No use speculating. Presumably we will find out in due course.

Sad story.

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

Very sad. Scary possibility that the keel came off at sea.

Those samoas (depending on the exact model) have a high ballast ratio and a fairly narrow fin keel, but the engineering should be capable of dealing with the loads, and long term fatigue issues. It would be interesting to hear from Evans. Hawk was a near sistership.

While I hope that is true, there may be something to the fact that people greatly out of shape just never get off the couch to go too. But I want to believe cruising will improve my physical condition.
From my perspective, there seem to be a lot of alcoholics on boats, but I don't believe boating is the cause.
I do not mean this poorly, but they were very lucky people to live to that age, and be in good shape. Both my parents went after long debilitating diseases.
To lie in great pain and fear all the while loosing dignity as one loses the capability of ones basic bodily functions is not good.

I've always said that I want to live as long as I have quality of life, and when I go, I want to go out like a light. Hopefully a very long time from now.

I hope their kids had lots of pictures to show the Grandchildren as living a life such as they did leaves a legacy of sorts, not many can say their Grandparents lived such lives.

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

They were good friends of us and we had dinner with them the night before this happened. Their Samoa was steel and the keel welded. They just had a haul-out, right next to us doing our haul-out and everything looked to be in good order.

Here is written info from the Colombian Navy. The English is from Google Translate so horrible, but I added the original Spanish text as well:

In the last hours, Coast Guard units from the Navy located in vicinity to island Bolívar, south of San Andrés, a sailboat Dutch flag name "Talagoa", unmanned, which apparently suffered an accident that caused his shipwreck . Panama last March 25, with two crew, bound for Providence and was reported missing to the Center - units of the Coast Guard Station San Andrés a search and rescue sailing ship, which had sailed from Columbus had activated search and Rescue Caribbean based in Cartagena de Indias, by the National Rescue Coordination Center of Madrid Spain. In the boat they were found passports and other documents of a Dutch couple, who were not found on board.
Faced with this event, currently the authorities of Judicial Police and prosecution are advancing research to determine the relationship of the wreck, with reported Tuesday by the National Police finding the body of a woman on the beaches of Sound Bay , southeast of the island of San Andres, and another body of a man located by the Navy, floating about a kilometer and a half from Rocky sector. The Specific Command of San Andres and Providencia continue to support the work of the competent authorities to clarify the facts occurred and the full identity of the missing. While it is inviting the community to report any emergency via toll-free 146 or VHF marine channel 16. -

Tragic. Do you think it happened while trying to make a port?

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

Sorry to hear that Jedi, its a big shock when something sudden like this happens to freinds.

Thanks for the info. I think its a real wake up call when something like this happens to what looks like a very well found vessel and experianced crew.

Thanks for the heads up on the construction. Steel and a welded keel shouldnt fail, but a freinds keel came of pretty cleanly on his 35 foot steel yacht when she slipped her mooring. It broke right around the HAZ area just outside the weld.

It was poorly supported without proper floors, just frames into the keel, and we think it was some kind of corten steel, which can be harder to weld. but even so it was very unexpected on such a moderate fin keel. Hopefully we will find out the cause in time so we can make yachts safer and hopefully prevent some similar occurances in the future.

b.
I don't know the exact shipyard. On that newspaper notice the son said that it was a very solid boat built in Groningen. Groningen is known to have several high quality steel and aluminum shipyards, I don't know in what shipyard the boat was built neither it is mentioned on the article.

You get me confused with that Breehorn case. You are certainly referring to Hooligan V that it was indeed built by Breehorn but it was not a Breehorn, it was a Max Fun 35, a sportive cruiser racer. The boats commercialized under the name of Breehorn are sturdy voyage boats.

Anyway the type of boat was completely different and we know what happened on the case of the Hooligan V: A modification of the boat keel by somebody that had not the knowledge to do that, adding not only more 200kg of ballasty but weakening also all structure.

About this one we don't know what happened but I am certainly curious to know why the keel on a steel boat come lose so easily. But being the boat on the caribbean I doubt that would be made a research on that.

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

Very sad indeed, i think this is the first time i have heard of the keel falling off a metal boat, a beautiful too i might add. I would not count on ever finding the actual cause, we never seem to, so I'm sure there will be lots of speculation, like there has been with the catamaran Rainmaker. I have to agree with others that have noted that the couple looked amazingly fit and healthy in that photo for their age, the lifestyle obviously agreed with them.

Corten steel? It's used because it is more surface corrosion resistant, but there was something about Corten steel in bridge girders in New York (USA) state (they salt the roads in winter) failing unexpectedly after only a few years from a crack form of corrosion (I've forgotten the correct term) in the 1980s. Crack corrosion moves fast.

Re: Dutch couple found dead, their sailboat found upturned

Interesting to know if the yacht floated with the keel missing or if its just being supported by a reef. I guess with enough foam insultion (say 2-3 inches) it could possibly be quite bouyant without the keel, especially with a couple of watertight compartments at the ends.
