Wow. I posted my response (I almost never wear shoes). If you are so insistent that I wear shoes on board your boat, or I don't go... Sorry, but I probably don't need you as a friend. I'd no sooner insist than someone NOT wear shoes as the other. It's my life - if not wearing shoes makes me more secure, sorry... We won't be sailing together on YOUR boat. But, you are always welcome on mine - with or without.

I used to go barefoot from the moment I stepped aboard til the moment I parked the dinghy. I now wear shoes on occasion, like when working with heavy stuff, e.g. diesel starter. I learned my lesson as illustrated in the pic.

Many a vacation has been ruined by foot injuries; cuts, stubbed or broken toes and I don't encourage crew going barefoot except when lounging at anchor. What seems to be easy footing for someone familiar with the boat turns out to be the danger zone for guests and short term crew. As to what kind I prefer the new no odor sperry deck shoes, kind of like a low cut tennis shoe types. Figawi is one style I like a lot.

barefoot whenever possible, personally I'm much happier that way and you are more careful.

It all depends on the circumstance. Mostly I don't wear shoes. But if I'm offshore, and it's getting hairy, I've found that shoes do give a better grip, better protection, etc. Just much less comfortable and fun. So 99% of the time I'm 'shoeless". I have all my toes, however, one is stubbed and a little painful at the moment. Not enough to change my habits though.
