Re: Do I Look Pretty? Or Are You Lonely?

We were anchored in Admiralty Harbour, Bequia in the Grenadines when a solo sailor on a French-flagged Jenneau pulled in and dropped anchor right next to us. After he backed down, he ended up about 30 feet off our beam. He was so close that I didn't have to raise my voice to ask if he thought we might be a bit too close. He asked, "What do you want me to do?", and I suggested he let out a few more meters of chain, which he did.

He was still closer than I prefer, but I decided to let it go. We invited him over for wine and cheeses that evening, and ended up becoming friends. We ran into him a couple of times on other islands, and would always get together and chat. Nice fellow.

Sometimes the close encounters can lead to a good outcome. I always felt that cruising was as much about meeting new friends as it was seeing new ports of call.

1 Buy a steel boat.

2 Put "UNINSURED STEEL BOAT" lee cloths on it.

One guy, concerned that someone was anchoring too close, encouraged the gentleman to move farther away by saying, "I'm a lawyer."

Re: Do I Look Pretty? Or Are You Lonely?

People that don't know any better anchor too close or anchor on top of you. It does them a service to politely ask them to move. They come away with learning something and there is no reason to get bad feelings out of the experience. Good anchoring etiquette is something many cruisers are not that well schooled on. Some of the worst I've experienced was when we cruised the Med for a couple of seasons.

I always heard that line as fat chicks, but it is good to know where your preferences lay

Re: Do I Look Pretty? Or Are You Lonely?

Yup, it can apply to a lot of different scenarios. Just don't get caught doing it!

Road Warrior (Mad Max II) spikes all along your hull, especially near the WL, & an ANTI-Riding Sail. One that makes your boat slew about wildly when anchored. Conducting Skeet practice around cocktail hour might work too.
Love this thread. I will be better prepared next time I anchor!

Ya, I kind of tend to agree. 'Close' is a relative concept. I've seen people anchor with PLENTY of room, only to have a neighbor start squawking. If you tend to anchor in tight anchorages frequently, you become a victim of perception. Nothing looks that close anymore.

When someone anchors very close, I look at the scope out. Either you're in each others swing radius or not. Your'e either going to hit or your not. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

If you swing oddly, it will be a gentle bump. Now comes the 'I'm afraid if we turn and then he drags into me'. Dragging is a slow motion affair not requiring panic. If it happens at night, throw out some fenders, raft him up to you, then go back to bed and deal with it in the morning.

This does not really look like a big to me. Let's not get territorial over the free water we've 'staked out'.
