Re: Cyclone Debbie

Just saw on TV a monohull break loose in Able Point Marina get blown onto the rock wall. Was still floating. Lines must have chaffed through with everybody ordered off vessels yesterday.

Just had a tree next door in Mackay fall overpowerline. Fortunately it is an insulated line and we still have power at present.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Something wrong here.

Latest has wind increasing at Hamilton Island and the pressure steady at lowest point.
Wind now SW.

Cyclone has moved back to sea? Just a wiggle? What gives?

Wind in Proserpibe still going up, but slowly.

Airlie beach will be a friggin sand dune... as for that marina...
The giant backpacker's place on the main street will have a little protection from the NW, the more W of N, the better for them.

Mark, a while back, the tops of the piles at the marina at Hamilton is. were trimmed shorter, because "they looked too tall."

Since you left, a big extension has been built at Abel Point Marina, and there was a lot of difficulty with the hill slipping into the marina during the last big rain. In addition, another marina has been built in the bay just southwest of the Whitsunday Sailing Club. And, there's a new marina in Mackay.

This is being a pretty awful event, and at this point nobody can go anywhere, do anything. I hope everybody's tucked up safe.

Ann

Stu M is correct, the rainfall chart has been updated.

.

Hate to say it, but it might be for the best if it sinks. After the eye passes it could be blown into the rest of the marina.

Keith Williams again? The story goes he did the same at Hinchinbrook marina, resulting in total destruction there.

Hope the piles are long enough this time.

One good thing is that Debbie is making landfall during daytime

Re: Cyclone Debbie

I see Hamilton Island airport clocked a peak (10min average) wind speed of 103Kts and peak gusts of 142kts. (232km/he and 262km/hr respectively).
Awesome (as in terrible)!

Re: Cyclone Debbie

I wonder if anyone reefed the beach umbrellas at the Hayman Island resort? I recall there being a lot of them last time we sailed by!

When I noticed the shorter pilings at the Hammo marina a few years ago, I asked one of the staff what had happened. Was something about aesthetics and the sensibilities of the island land guests views and so on. I asked about cyclone issues and got a big shrug in response. I hope for the best but will not be surprised at severe damage there or in Airlie at Able Point.

Plenty of trees have been falling over the area of Mackay as the ground has been saturated with 300-400 mm rain this week prior.

Just a neighbour that had not trimmed his trees. Always going to blow over. I estimate we had approx 100kph max in some gusts.

What did you do on 4MK? Announcer?
