Re: Cyclone Debbie

Some feedback from a tradie mate in Airlie. Quite a few in mast furling systems came unravelled in the storm causing significant damage. Not due to a failure in the locking system but rather apparently the little bit that poked out lead to the "Film Reel Effect" or "Reel out effect" and this then meant increasing and ultimately sufficient force to cause major damage. Interesting

Based on what I experienced on an adjacent boat with a wee bit of headsail ballooning out (not unfurled, just a wrinkle that got loose) in 60 knots, I can believe that damage you describe in 120 knots. Made a believer of me.

Out of curiosity, was there any perspective on in-boom vs in-mast mainsails? I saw one stack pack mainsail flying out of the pack in the videos, but was wondering if the same effect would (or had) hit the in-boom contingent.

One could imagine one's in-mast/boom mainsail would be safe due to the hardshell around it vs. a headsail, but clearly some came undone.

Not that it's a good plan compared to being elsewhere, but I imagine it could be quite the experience tied up to a bunch of mangroves deep in a creek.
In Cairns, the harbour master has the boats leave the marina, and they have pre assigned areas in the mangrove creeks to go.

Friends went up a mangrove creek in a mono, in Fiji, but the wind strengths they experienced were less than what was recorded at Airlie Beach this year.
They reported 50 at the masthead, nothing at deck level, this via ham radio, at the time.

We were in a late season cyclone that had been forecast to hit southern Tonga, we were at Raoul Island in the Kermadecs not far from the met station, anchored in Denham Bay. The eye came over us, and with it, the 180 deg wind shift, and we had to leave. This was in our previous boat to this one. We actually had to motor sail (storm jib plus engine) to get off the lee shore. We went out and hove to under the storm jib alone. This was a decaying cyclone, and it was fast moving, so the seas never had time to really get up. One lesson here is that like our little cyclone Lisa, they do not always go where they are predicted to go.

Anywhere boats are stored, there will be boats with absentee owners. And the way of the world is that not everybody has a minder for his boat when he leaves it somewhere.

Ann
