Yes it can. It’ll be a dog in the mountains, but is still perfectly doable.....if you know how to control a trailer.

Couldn’t it theoretically tear my transmission up if I take it for long 3-8 hour drives with the sailboat?

What's the towing capacity of your truck? How much does the boat+trailer+stuff weigh?

When I first started towing my Hunter 20 with my 2008 Wrangler Unlimited I was very timid - constantly afraid of all the damage I was doing. After about 15 minutes on the interstate I loosened up and realized everything was wonderful. The trailer was in really good shape and we just breezed down the highway like it was nothing.

Re: Can truck pull a 21-22 footer boat?

Your typical Catalina 22 weighs 2500 lbs, add another 1000 for a trailer, and 500 for stuff, you’re at 4000lbs.

If you’ve got a 4clyinder engine and associated transmission, best guess you’re at the top end of the tow rating. If you’ve got a bigger engine and a tow package you’ll be ok.

But still doable. Mind you’re not going to go 80 down the highway.

But if you drive like a maniac you could tear the transmission out of a f-350!

Re: Can truck pull a 21-22 footer boat?

A quick google search shows a tow rating of 2900 lbs. So legally, no. Safely, no. But ignoring all that, we'll it's a bad idea to ignore the laws and safety.

Re: Can truck pull a 21-22 footer boat?

Get a trailer with brakes, put a brake controller in your truck and plan your route strategically in order to avoid difficult terrain. Additionally and if needed, look into an add a leaf or a custom spring pack for that little truck and you will be fine.

Also make sure your tires can handle the load rating, if not get a tire with more rating. Some guys even go so far as to get tuner, which allows your engine to put out more power through remapping fuel etc. So right before you tow you can select a "tow" setting which will give you more power then when your done, turn it back to economy or standard.

You can do it with a little more efforts safely in my opinion.

Make sure you have a good transmission cooler. Your truck may have come with one. If not get the biggest one available. I had a new 1986 3/4 Chevy that I added the biggest transmission cooler right after purchase. The trans had 350,000 on it when I sold the truck. About half the mileage was towing, no repairs.
Now I have a diesel pu. Big difference when towing.

This is great advice I forgot to mention, you surely want a big tranny cooler and maybe even an EGT readout with that truck too.
