Common sense dictates when to use which one.
If you dont have common sense you have no business owning a boat, and are a hazard to yourself and others.
Exactly. I have an ale or two most days. On the other hand, it's been 30 years since I've had more than a few in close proximity. Honestly, just one in the afternoon tempers my impatience, which is probably the greater hazard. I calm down and slow down.

It also depends on the situation. Sometimes the policy is zero. But it doesn't need to be a policy. It's just obvious.

Re: Alcohol consumption whilst at anchor

I sail so I don't have restrictions. Canada is the worst. If the burocrats had their way we would always have a life jacket a helmet and never leave the dock.
I have subscribed to the rule of 4s passed onto me by a great sailor friend.
1. If you are not doing 4 knots put the motor on.
2. Be where you are going by 4pm.
3. Never leas than 4 feet under the keel.
4. NO MORE THAN 4 BEERS WHILE UNDERWAY.

So I guessed you missed reading actual facts on this situation. Canada is freer in this case compared to many places mentioned here.

Yup, Oh Canada … the great bastion of restricted liberties

My sugestion: go cruising
Ok little quick drift. Im in Australia at the moment (moololahbah). Im walking up the street today and there is a 2-3 inch diameter water hose crossing the footpath, there is 8 bright orange cones on the sides of the footpath warning you of the hazard. Then theres the council worker thats sole job is to politely say " watch your step"'which he did. As im walking back he says the same thing to me again. I stopped and asked him if that is seriously what hes been directed to do, just stand there and say to every single person " watch your step"......I've been in Asia to long, rules apon rules here......sorry back to the thread.

Bleeding ridiculous. Never heard such a thing. I hope they get that oppressive law changed or Australians will get the reputation for being puritanical unhappy killjoys, which I know they are not.

Don't quote me but I suspect 95% of us love these laws. Very few Australians are...please excuse, piss heads.

When you see the d*ckheads hooning around from Southern Moreton Bay to the Broadwater at weekends, you quickly appreciate such rules.

I don't get the whole "never a single drop underway" thing.

Is booze like your Kryptonite and once you've had a taste, you can't stop yourself until the bottle has been completely drained and you are wasted?

Or is it just a holy roller thing people say so they can feel pious and consider themselves superior to others?

Seems like with most things in life moderation is the key. Know your limits. Most people under normal conditions can responsibly enjoy a drink or two without being impaired.

Re: Alcohol consumption whilst at anchor

question:

I have placed a 1/4" thick plexi sheet bolted on stand off over all the 12v main wiring... busses, fuse blocks and switches etc. Most of the lugs have rubber shields (or whatever they are called). I removed the covers for the ANL fuse blocks. Would this approach be considered OK?

I think once you've had several beers at anchor, you'll probably be okay with it.

OK OK, I know that's a VERY BAD THING, but hear me out!
The other odd thing about us is that we LOVE cruising, albeit on a generally smaller scak
What is bad about a 32' RIB?! LOVE em. You can do some great cruising in a vessel like that

Pete7 of this parish used to cruise in a vessel like that. Get a big RIB on a plane and do a crossing which might take us 12 hours, in 3 or 4. Great stuff.

I am going to guess that there are more sailors out there agree with this than are willing to admit it.

Re: Alcohol consumption whilst at anchor

Since we collectively have overthought this already, can anyone site any regulations not involving interpretation, that say having a pop at anchor is illegal in the US or a particular state? Since I can get off a mooring quicker than drag my anchor up, that aspect doesn't ring quite right.
Cheers!
