Best anchorages in southern New England

After several years of building, I've finally got my little wooden boat fixed up for cruising. I've done a bit in my home waters of Huntington, NY, but am looking to go further afield this year. My cruising range is anywhere from the Throgs Neck Bridge to Nantucket.

What I'm particularly interested in is anchorages which are both scenic and with access to the shore. I like to row my dinghy ashore in the evening and stretch my legs. Being stuck aboard because rich landowners sick the dogs on you for stepping foot on 'their' beach (all to common in this neighborhood) gets my blood boiling.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Oh, you have literally hundreds if not thousands of places that fit this description. In 18 years of cruising that area, I never even thought about problems walking on shore because of land owners - there is just too much shore that is accessible even when private land exists in the same area.

I second Mark's reply. LI Sound is lined both sides with lots and lots of nice places to drop a hook and ready access to land. Too many to list.

Really. Okay, I guess I've just been sensitized by situation in Huntington, where my favorite anchorages are surrounded by big houses and landing is forbidden.

I'll be glad to head out east, then!

There is a nice anchorage in the cove north of the Newport bridge toll booth, w/ a short row to that beach and plenty of access to that island.

Re: Best anchorages in southern New England

There are hundreds of anchorages on both shores that meet your requirements: from the Calf Islands in tony Greenwich, Ct to Hadley Harbor outside of Woods Hole. Go to Active Captain and find them.
