We are in sw Sardinia, waiting for a window to mallorca. Any thoughts on the better places to hang around just before exiting the straights ?

Re: Leaving the med for gibraltar 2018

We have just had a very nasty front roll thu the Canaries. This implies the early winter weather is already set and will now comb the Atlantic North at regular intervals.

Be super extra reasonable finding the best window and do not leave Gib if iffy wx holds. It is better to arrive here late than hurry and get caught out.

From here to the Carib you can sail at any time, so there is no need to hurry it between the Gib an the Canaries, once November starts with the predominant fronts train progress.

Sail safe and be sure in thee Canaries there will be time to rest and refill at ease.

Barnakiel,
Thankyou for this update.

It's been a strange year for Atlantic weather, earlier in the year anyway - the lows tend to track just above the jet stream which usually points around Northern Europe but for months from mid Feb this year spent a lot of time much further south so the lows were making portugal wet in the south, jet stream now looking a bit confused so hopefully for you it will settle down again. https://www.netweather.tv/charts-and-data/jetstream
