Sailing from Gib to the Canaries in December is definitely late.

Consider coming down much sooner, say in September. Waste any extra time in the Canaries and or Cabo Verdes.

Cheers,
b.

I agree sooner the better , but there are more places than canaries and cabo Verde, like Madeira , Senegal , Gambia , guinea , it's foolish to aim just for Caribe if you cruising

I agree, but it's the last "sailing to schedule" we have for a long time....engine rebuild Nov 7 in Mallorca. Hopefully we can run for the canaries as soon as Dec 7. Not ideal, but nothing else for it.

Some marinetraffic ais density images converted to kap files for opencpn showing where it's busy if anyone is interested. Not that it's very busy anyway I'll probably head that way Nov/Dec so might see you there

Yes.

Extra time can be burnt anywhere South of the Canaries. I would only not agree with Madeira (* an attempt at explaining my take given below).

We live on Gran Can and having provided wx support to dozens of boats in our area over last 10+ years, I would suggest the patch around Madeira can be nasty. Probably way more nasty than their latitude might suggest.

We have just passed by Madeira two weeks ago sailing from the vicinity of the Azores (on a SE course, some 100 miles off). Being mid of the fine season, the conditions there were not quite conductive to sailing either.

Perhaps something to do with being close to the ridge most of the year.

Cheers,
b.

An Amel. A big, comfortable and safe boat.

Just pick up the best window there is when you depart. Fronts rolling in from W will be your only (if a serious one) wx challenge. Avoid grib only analysis. Look at the fronts as shown on radiofax images. When you are in Gibraltar, you will hopefully witness at least one such passage, which gives you some idea of how they are timed. They are more frequent and stronger as you make W.

And the traffic yes it is huge in el estrecho. Then it fans out pretty fast. Most of them follow fixed routes though. So if you find yourself in a cargo traffic jam, simply sail away from the highway.

We are on pontoon S in LPGC city marina now. Hope to see you docked safely and with big smiles one day in December.

Cheers,
b.

Venice. We left Croatia last week. Leaving to go south soon towards Montenegro for duty-free fuel and then west towards Gibraltar.
