Yacht aground, South China Sea

I thought you might be interested in this article that popped up on Chinese news feed - a yacht aground in the South China Sea:

说别的都是虚的,这才叫在南沙行使 权

From google translate: It is understood that the distress boat is a power boat named "PANGAEA", the home port for the Brazilian port of Santos, the captain of about 28 meters, 9 meters wide, 2 meters draft, the total tonnage of about 70 tons. Due to the bad weather at that time, the visibility was low, coupled with the positioning error of navigation instruments on the ship, leading to the ship strayed into the area of the incident stranded. The parties expressed their gratitude to China for its prompt assistance and thoughtful arrangements.

Yes indeed.
Quite the boat, from what i found. Sure wonder what is meant by the comment that translated to "positioning error of instruments on the ship". A shame, in any case.

Re: Yacht aground, South China Sea

It ran aground on a disputed reef claimed by many but administered by PRC. 954′N 11532′E Mischief Reef.

Might blame it on bad weather or navigation error, but those reefs are a dangerous chain and the PRC reclaiming them have not helped. Shipping stay north of that chain for a reason.

Chinese article says the ketch declared mayday at 1/1/2018 0720, boat was damaged but no water engress.

Multiple attempts to tow her off the reef failed, line breakage. Situation worsened until the 3 disembarked 27 hours after grounding.

PRC says they'll post sentries to ensure no looting or salvage and protect their property.

This is the stuff that makes PRC really happy because it is humanitarian show of effective control.

More about the yacht here.. Paneristi Public Forum: "I am taking an initiative. What are you doing?". Pictorial from Pangaea.

Very similar... different rig... to Amyr Klink's 'Paratii 2' ... seen here in Stanley, FI.

I wonder if the 'bonk beds' had anything to do with the casualty?

It is indeed a sistership of Pararii 2. Amyr Klink, the Brazilian explorer, set up the boatyard near So Paulo to build his 30m aluminium polar exploring boat and then ran the yard to build a few more one-off aluminium boats, also Thierry Stump designs. Mike Horn, the South African explorer, had Pangaea built pretty much to the same design as Paratii 2, but didn't opt for the carbon fiber aerorigs. The boats were all transported to the port of Santos for launching, hence the port registry in Brazil.

Seems Mr Horn and Pangaea are on a two-year quest to circle the planet via its poles....

Fixed that for you....

She is a centreboarder so , depending on state of tide when she ran aground and prevailing wind, a reasonable prospect of salvage.

Re: Yacht aground, South China Sea

This Explore | Learn |Act - Mike Horn and this http://www.mikehorn.com/pole-2-pole/ seem to suggest that she was north bound in the NorthEast Monsoon so that puts her under the lee of the reef..... maybe all is not lost...
