$7M 50m Eleonora E sunk in Spain after Allision

This is a really sad story reported in several yachting mags yesterday:
Yachting World
Super Yacht Times

In summary the 49.5-metre Van der Graaf schooner Eleonora E has sunk after an allision in Port Tárraco, Tarragona, Spain by a 60-metre rescue vessel. The rescue boat Punta Mayor lost control due to engine troubles whilst reversing.

No one was hurt, and they'll obviously refloat her soon, with a shipyard somewhere picking up a complete refit job,

And I have to say an astonishing photo taken from above.

Elsewhere there was a video of the allision.

I don't know about the refit. Wood or glass that was one hell of a hit. There must be tremendous damage.

A true pity.

Sadly, she will be beyond economical repair, you can hear the frames and other timber work shattering as she was crushed against the wharf side....

I feel for the old man and crew on the Support vessel, no fun been a passenger and knowing what's about to happen and can't avoid it....

I think I liked the reading of it more than watching this video.

The thing that cracked me up was its a Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima vessel that sank her.

Can you explain that for those linguistically challenged?

In spite of that, enlarging the drone photo shows the port/dockside hull curve to be normal as best one can see - and the frames must be pretty much intact for the heavy rig to be fair and plum at near horizontal. The allision side, though, who knows...

Monday morning critic here, from the video it does not look like the skipper tried to pull the wheel, like he/she just backed straight into it. Did the steering fail also? At least it’s a government vessel that did the damage they can’t run from the obligation to make right and compensate the owner.

It’s a steel hulled replica. Van de Graaf shipyard built, launched 2000

No personal knowledge, but I doubt if putting the helm over would have much effect on the course when backing at low speed. Small rudder(s) no flow, lotsa mass... I would imagine that the helmsman was frantically banging on the shift lever or shouting at the engine room, not twirling the wheel.

Agreed. If that thing is anything like a typical smaller shaft drive powerboat, even relatively generous rudders are too small to steer much in reverse unless you're going pretty darn fast.

Interesting, I did not know she was steel.

Even so I doubt she could survive that wack.

That was a hell of a blow.

But will be interesting to see what the hull looks like when raised.

Remember "My Song" that fell off a carrier a few years ago? A other mega. I wonder what happened to that?

For various reasons it’s almost impossible to new build a replica in wood and get it rated as a passenger vessel
