Van de Stadt Super Dogger $12,800 AUD

Van de Stadt Super Dogger $12,800 (AUD)

31” x 8’6’’ x 4’6’

This boat is in very good condition and will pass any survey / inspection.

Professionally built in Fremantle by the Jarman (Jarmon?) Brothers for their own use (WA off-shore racing) in the 1970s as Kalia. Constructed in marine ply and NZ Kauri pine.

Completely refitted in Perth by current owner over 7 years and relaunched as Blue Moon II in 2009 in a completely new vessel condition, so in most respects, this boat is only 9 years old.

Previous cruising history includes WA to Indonesia (Lombok, Port Hedland, Darwin - 1980s) and single handed from Perth (WA) to Port Huon (Tasmania) in 2012. Currently berthed at Franklin Marine, Huon Valley, Tasmania.

Blue Moon II was taken back to bare timber inside and out, repaired where required and completely epoxy coated (with glass below the waterline). All fittings removed and inspected and mostly replaced. Anti fouled with Aquarius Marine Coating Coppercoat (Coppershield) which is still active.

New items fitted include:

All standing rigging (including new chain plates, turnbuckles, Sta-Lok terminals and mast cap)
Boom and gooseneck (Tasker)
Reefing headsail (Reefit B furler and Hood sail, 110%),
Trysail (Hood, unused)

A shame I'm looking for bigger.
Looks like a good boat at a bargain price.

Best of luck with your sale !

Am I sure - sort of sure. I don't feel like parting but I do need to so...
Immaculate - well photos lie a tiny bit I guess, a hard nosed cold approach would probably be very very good rather than immaculate; Blue Moon II is a boat (and I can be am pedantic) so there is always something can be tidied a bit more but she is certainly sound and looking good!

Thanks Bob, I do believe I have priced her competitively but time will tell I guess. I also believe that she is bargain for the person that wants a 31' boat that sails very well, off shore capable and is in tip top condition and remember:

Less is more

EDIT: Hope you survived the last weekend of weather OK!

Re: Van de Stadt Super Dogger $12,800 AUD

A lovely looking boat, Wotname! I think it might be a Dogger design (if its draft is 1.41m as you say), rather than the Super Dogger design (which has a draft of 1.75m)...

Van de Stadt Design - Yacht Designers and Naval Architects

10 Dogger 9,45 7,40 2,60 1,41 Plywood 1965 Stock Plan

124 Super Dogger 9,35 7,40 2,60 1,75 Plywood 1963

What is your sense of its draft? As shallow as 1.41m? Good for anchoring that little bit closer to shore.

Cheers,

TrimJim

Thanks for this information TrimJim and welcome aboard CF. It's a mighty first post IMO ().
You know, I have been trying unsuccessfully since 2002 to get a definitive answer as to the differences between a Dogger and Super Dogger and your post is the closest I have seen.

I took the draft measurements of the internet (never a definitive source) as I have never measured it on the hard - maybe I should have... My sense was always that it was around 5', maybe a bit more but certainly under 6'.

It was described to me when I bought it as Super Dogger and there was a sistership in Perth (Minx II IIRC) that was also known as a Super Dogger and they were on the hard in the same boat yard and were identical in all the external hull and keel respects. I don't know if they had the same builder or not as the owners did not have that information. I suspect not as the internal construction was somewhat different although cabin and cockpit dimensions were the same. Maybe both these boats were misidentified over the years.

Perhaps in the interests accuracy (and truth in advertising) I should describe her as "Dogger/Super Dogger". Thanks again for your interest.

Re: Van de Stadt Super Dogger $12,800 AUD

Thanks for the warm welcome, Wotname! Another (easier?) way of determining which it is, might be to measure LOA - there is a 10 centimetre difference there too apparently.
Cheers,
TrimJim

, while true in essence, do I measure from the new bow roller, the old bow roller, the piece of 50mm timber that was added to the stem head to reinforce the stem head fitting and add support to the forward end on the gunnels and was the 25 mm cover strip on the stern that seals transom and deck interface part of the original plan or not. Let alone the additional glass and resin that could change the LOA, or the sanding that removed material over the years. Did the original builder get the dimensions spot to begin with.

I have tried to make contact with the builders (or their sons) but to no avail (yet) and it gets harder every year it seems. If only one of them would show up on CF one day!

Maybe a good boat should have some mystery in it's past that never gets resolved...

LOA not necessarily easier at all, then!
Agree with you about the mystery element - not knowing the exact ingredients of something often only adds to the allure. Reminds me of this quote:
