Seeking Aluminum Hull Project Boat, 45'+

Hi Folks,

Please allow me to ask for a little help from the Forum Members. I am looking for a retirement project and hope to find that old aluminum hull sailboat long forgotten at the back of the yard. As long as the hull is sound (or repairable) and the size is 45-55 in length, I would be interested in learning about it. Ideally, I hope to find an a abandoned project that needs finishing. I am looking internationally as well as North America.

So if you've seen a hull buried somewhere and thought, "That might be a great fixer-upper," please pass it along and I'll take a look at it.

Thank you.

Link? Reference? - They had a hull some time ago for sale, but I don't think you will find 'abandoned projects' or 'buried hulls' there.

Try reaching out to 'The Metal Boat Society' (based out of PNW) on FB or the website. I recall a presentation last year or year before at the annual conference - the gentleman and family had an excellent hull and looking for someone to carry on the dream.

This is a very different project to an old boat, but in many ways it is much better option.

KM sold another similar hull project a few years ago. I have seen the finished version. The home finished solution was fantastic. It was a basic plywood interior but extremely functional and easy to achieve for little money.

The owner ended up with a beautiful proffesionaly built hull and a new boat for (I suspect) a similar effort and cost to a major refit of an older boat.

However, a project such as this will take time, money, skills and persistence. Make sure you have plenty of each of the requirements before commencing.

Mark,

I have been interested in a boat that might fit be just right for you. It is a catamaran located in Florida. I have attached a response that I received from an inquiry. Follow the directions to get to a listing for the boat.

Bahama Bound

John,

The cat is still a project needing lots of cosmetics and rebuilding. I am the broker who sold this cat last year and this new owner has done some work mostly the addition of new wood seats in the cockpit and more and lots of engine work.
You can see much more on yachtworld.com look up 2000 40' custom catamaran.
Thanks,
Barry

Thanks! I drooled over “Ayacanora” for a week and decided my $150k budget wasn't enough to make the repairs she needs. It's a beautiful vessel and I hope someone can do her justice.

I flew out to Alberta to look at that boat.....what a butcher job it was. It's actually a Bruce Roberts 31 and he ruined it by modifying everything. He built a compartment in the rear to hold a 25 HP Honda outboard on rails to pull it out of the water vertically, He made the keel to retract vertically into the cabin so as soon as you get to the bottom of the stairs you are chest against a 2' wide by 6' long keel box that goes almost to the ceiling.

There is no place left for a saloon and the dining area was relocated to the bow area.

It does come with a beautiful 5th wheel trailer, but the boat will never see the water...... sorry!

I've been drooling over this one lately. Needs a rig, electrical, plumbing and other finishing touches, but the hard work is done (engine is already in). Also, it's not 45' but if you've been on any modern designed 40' you'll know it feels larger than an older 45'
