Parts Most Likely to Fail?

I am installing a 10kw Westerbeke btda generator- the unit is new to me but is an older model and has set in dry storage for a number of years. It has been gone through mechanically for the diesel and brought up to snuff. Is there anything that should be done maint, wise on the electrical side. It currently produces power and sounds ok but it is a LOT easier to work on now than it will be once it is put down in the hull. I would much rather replace anything now that is likely to be trouble. Any thoughts?

Parts most likely to fail? Depends on how they are made but the answer might be the connections.

Run it hard and hot for an hour before you put it on The boat.

If the gen end will output 90% power for an hour you’ve got a winner

+1. A hard bench-test over a good duration should bring to thr surface any major issues it may be brewing, with the added benefit of being easily accessed and debugged/repaired.

Spare voltage regulator and some exciter diodes might come in handy in the future. If it uses slip rings maybe a spare set of brushes. I found a spare V/R on e bay for my home Kabota 6.5 K.W. for around 50 bucks.

Check or replace the load bearing at the end of the shaft. You don’t want any wobbling going on. I’m not familiar with your particular unit but I have had to replace the one on mine.

Re: Parts Most Likely to Fail?

When running it, apply a load electrically to make it work hard

Re: Parts Most Likely to Fail?

Based on personal experience of an older and lightly used generator my guess would be the water pump and associated hoses....

Re: Parts Most Likely to Fail?

Not familiar with this design; however on a Fischer Panda I fitted an extra S/S filter box after the impeller but before the heat exchanger in the raw water hose to capture any shredded impeller parts; it has served me well!
