Correct Connection for 4-Way Battery Switch

I need to replace my broken battery selector switch. The original was the simple on/off position switch. I decided to buy the four position switch to replace it. IE Off/1/both/2.
My setup is

• 1 Starter battery
• 2 house batteries

It has no wiring schematic. The connections are common, 1 +2. Logically I assume that I connect the existing cable to the 1 connection and buy a new positive battery cable and connect it to the positive terminal of one of my two house batteries and then to the 2 connection. If my logic is correct why is there a common connection? More importantly is that I know that by posting this thread…. All will be explained.

The common connection feeds the load of your switch. In other words the common is the output of your source battery(s) that are selected on the switch. It should feed your breaker feeders or bus bar depending on what you have. Hope this is clear wish I could draw a schematic.

The switch is there to allow you to control which battery (or battery bank) is giving power to the common connection. Common is to the loads (starter, DC panel, etc).

So battery power flows in through 1 and 2. The switch will control which one is being used, either 1 or 2 or both. The common connection can be thought of as where the power is going.
