Bad batteries or not charging?

I looked up the Freedom 20 battery charge/inverter, and it's only single channel.

So how can the starter battery voltage go up, and the house stay the same?

Maybe there's another charger connected to the house bank that you don't know about.

Sounds like you have some figuring out to do!

NB : if you are expecting what the PO did to the boat to make sense, that might be over-optimistic. Did they generally appear to know what they were doing?

Where do you get that the charger is a Freedom 20?

The only information provided by the OP is that he's got a Link 2000 and that he's got two banks.

I would check the batteries with a hygrometer. The specific gravity of each cell should be reasonably close. If not, it may be bad batteries. If close, I would do an equalize cycle on them to desulfate them. You may also want to get a book on boat 12 volt electrical systems, and that would give you an understanding of all the information that has been given to you. With those basics, you could check to see if the batteries are all wired correctly. You may need to go to a good battery supplier to have them equalize the batteries, or at least to do a good load test and see if they are good. Don't just use West Marine, or the local automotive supplier, use someone who specializes in deep cycle storage batteries.

Find out if there's any charge first. If no charge, who cares what state the batteries are in. Likely problem here is no charging, then maybe a bad battery in the bank somewhere.

6 batteries in a 30 footer? That's alot of batteries.....
