Hitching rides on boats..help

Hi, I am in Indonesia right now and in the next couple months it is possible that I would want to hitch a ride on a boat out towards various possible destinations. I need advice on this please. It could be to Darwin (making my way east), or to the Maldives (making my way west). How is it in Indo?
To be honest, I have little sailing experience but have been eager to learn, and best way to do it is on the boat. I love the water.
I just wanna travel and surf in different locations without spending too much.
I thought I could offer crew help, learn, offer some cash for passage on boats.
