Crew Available: Hey Key West people?

My friend and I just moved from Illinois, and started living on the hook outside Garrison Bight. We are hoping to meet some people and maybe get some leads on jobs. I have a lot of welding and all around fabrication experience from restoring vintage Porsches and VW's. Since I have just purchased a boat with the intention of doing a refit, I realize I should be looking for a job in a marina. I will most likely go this route. That being said, I have an uncontrollable urge to work on the water. Be it a lobster boat or a charter boat I think I would love it. If anyone out there has any tips or wants to come have dinner on the boat we look forward to hearing from you. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Good luck.. Talking with the locals it seems jobs are pretty scarce there. Many even seem to compete for jobs at Tom Thumb.


If you have no luck, I would head North to Miami, Indiantown or Ft. LAUDERDALE

Knew quite a few people in marathon who pretty quickly found work up there-much of it as raw labor though just a little bit above minimum wage.

I'm on the hook. Can't stomach paying to live on a boat. Just doesn't make sense. Probably because I'm young and like the pirate aspect of it. Today I was hopping a sea wall to load my dingy and yes there was a sign from the city prohibiting it but I give no shits about those signs. I served my country based on lies, freedom in this country is an illusion. $20 can buy you way more freedom in a third world country than the US constitution can in America. I don't see me staying here long. Felt way more at home when I lived in Vietnam than I have anywhere in the states. The people I meet in America are awesome, the government is despicable.

I was thinking of using that dock. Wasn't sure I'd be able to find a good place to drop the hook close to there. I'd love to by you a drink and pick your brain a lil. Let me know, I'll be traipsing up and down the island all day looking for work tomorrow.

Now that I'm fully awake I realize how rude and insensitive my earlier post above was to folks of the transgender persuasion. I was going for a chuckle but clearly went too far. Apologies to all as required. This is also of interest to many, I'll bet:

Wookie, you're about 40 years too late for that attitude. I cannot think of any other place, bar none, that has seen more of that approach than Key West. Most oldtimers can recall story after story of how things used to be. And, unfortunately, that's the very attitude that is at the root of the anti-liveaboard sentiment that has affected the cruisers around the country.

The holding is good tucked up next to Flemming Key. There are liveaboards who have been hooked there for 7-8 years. Just keep out of the "No Boat" zone or the coasties will come hassle you. No matter where you drop the hook, its a wet ride when the wind blows out of the north.

Take care, it hasn't been a great week in Key West. Blowing 20-25 out of the north all week. I heard a couple of distress calls last week (one dinghy being blown out to sea).

I'll hit you up bro. For some reason I'm finding hard to do anything besides drink rum and spearfish from my paddle board. Maybe I'll go to shore tomorrow.
