An emission-free lift to Newfoundland

Some day I hope to afford a sail boat but for now I am a touring cyclist. I'm 6003km into a cross-Canada tour and feel it would go against my entire traveling philosophy to jump on a huge, noisy ferry in Nova Scotia and burn up all that fuel getting to Newfoundland. If anybody out there (or anyone you know) is in Nova Scotia or P.E.I. in early July 2013 and would help me (and my bike) cross the strait to Newfoundland in a slower, more natural way, I'd gladly pay for the service! My traveling budget is a bit modest but please, name your price.
I sincerely hope nobody minds a current non-cruiser posting on this forum and please do let me know if it's a problem.

Cheers,
d_alex

Cool idea. Shame I am on the other side of the world.

A friend took some guys from ushuia to the south magnetic pole. They had walked and cycled down america from the north magnetic pole without any fossil fuels.

Good on you, and good luck

and take a compost poop system with you. I have no problem with those who insist on living "green", just as long as they DO NOT try to impose it on the rest of us!

Thanks so much. That sounds like an incredible adventure for both you and your passengers!

Trouble is, people who don't live green 'impose' their environmental damage on those who do...

Try the "crew" forum. This is slightly off topic for that group, but not by too much.

I'd even consider posting in "General Sailing". Make it less of an ad and more of a conversation, more people read that forum and likely there is someone who would love an excuse to make that trip.

Re: An emission-free lift to Newfoundland

Also walk the docks, ask around. Taking on crew (or passengers) is not something people do (or should) take lightly. So a face to face chance meeting is always helpful. Don't give up too soon and go with the gas guzzling crowd. I am sure you will find someone that is keen for an excuse for a good adventure. you might need to accept that the engine will be used to get in and out of a tight harbour? Or maybe row the dinghy out and meet them at anchor.

On a different tack another friend has converted his diesel to run on raw vege oil. He just needs to work out how to make methane (from his composting toilet), to run his stove and he will be completely FF free.

Best of luck, and fair winds.
