Re: 35 to 41 ft bluewater boat near Florida

Crawford,
I have a boat listed in the classified section that should easily fit the bill!

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-a-158282.html

IMHO she is an awesome boat with numerous features that make her very attractive. My initial plan was to put her on the hard for 6-10 weeks and go through all the hoses, wiring, add wind instruments, an arch w/ solar, and so on for a 2-4 year navigation. the engine, sails and rigging are in excellent shape, the hull is as strong as they come and she is heavy for her size (50hp engine upgraded to 65hp and 17" prop to 19" max prop) but the propulsion is too! so she moves well for the beam 13" and weight. I was given notice at my work to be laid off, 73 people in my department and they laid off 40, and i was sparred so now she is available as i continue to work! You can see the listings on the 2 major site also.

This is a cautionary tale & exactly the kind of boat you should be looking for! If you find a boat where some else has done all the fixing up for you they eat the depreciation & you reap the benefits. They recover only pennies on the dollar & you pay only pennies on the dollar. Boats like this are out there, you just have to take your time & look at a lot of boats. If you're just looking for the cheapest boat you can find you're looking for fool's gold. You'll end up buying a boat that the seller realized was not worth spending the time & money to fix up.

Re: 35 to 41 ft bluewater boat near Florida

The best advice I can give you is stay away from projects. Let someone else fix it up, buy new sails and install a new engine. Saw a 34ft Mongan with a new Algrip, new engine, North sails that had been used twice, sell for less than the motor job. NOBODY GETS THE MONEY BACK THEY PUT INTO BOATS FIXING THEM UP. Lucking if you get 10-20% back.

Re: 35 to 41 ft bluewater boat near Florida

I'm going to be selling my boat. I was going to detail her and make her pretty for selling and ask around 48k, but if you wanted to paint her yourself I'd be willing to sell her a lot cheaper, 42k. She is a 1974, S & S designed ketch, built by Northstar in ONtario, Canada. Very heavily built, serious cruising boat. Northstar 80/20

Re: 35 to 41 ft bluewater boat near Florida

It will be well worth your time to visit some big working boatyards with lots of boats out of the water. You can learn a lot just moseying around in a yard where lots of cruisers are in DIY mode. In NE Florida, Green Cove Springs Marina would fit the bill. What's under the waterline is as important as what is above, on many levels.
