Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

Ben, remember to dicker with the owner over the price. The important thing is to find the boat you like that has the basic layout you need then worry about the price.

We looked for 8 years and found our perfect boat. We have had Dreamtime for 8 months and found that we cannot handle a sailboat anymore due to our heath issues. We have worked on Dreamtime to update her to make it ready to cruise but find we can't.

The freedom was raised before. I love the layout and it's easy to control the rig. I do remember something to do with the deck or hull being an issue.

Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

I believe that I have the boat you are looking for: 1985 Hunter 34. Shoal draft. Currently lying Beaufort, SC. This is a well-regarded boat for what you are intending; namely, coastal cruising. Roomy, fast, easy to sail and up to date looks. She has just completed a cruise from Greenport, NY to Fort Myers, FL. and is currently lying Beaufort, SC

Some particulars:
New standing rigging 2016
New running rigging 2016
New VHF w/ AIS and RAM mike 2016
Raymarine Autopilot
Full Bimini with Dodger and side curtains
New four battery 600 AH battery bank 2016
RIB dinghy with 3.5 HP Mercury OB
Adler-Barbour refrigeration
110 Genoa
150 Genoa
Roller furling headsail
Jiffy reefing mainsail system
pressurized hot/cold water
propane 2 burner stove
3GM30F Yanmar engine w/ high output alternator.

Call me to arrange for a viewing/test sail.

36' Hunter Sailboat - Reduced Must sell! Make an offer!
I have no vested interest in this boat. I have never seen it. The ad does, however, sound like it's in the line of what you're looking for.

I would have said ' I have a Hunter that was "drawn" by Mr.Cherubini'..I have never ever seen a Cherubini that could be had for 30K.. 300K give or take is more like what a "real Cherubini" would cost..Good luck selling her, they are IMO one of the better built boats made by Hunter...

Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

This was posted in the Westsail Facebook group yesterday...
1974 Westsail 32 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

It is not exact, but very close to what you are looking for.
Built like a tank, very seaworthy, and very comfortable.
Lots of them have been on circumnavigations, and it is one of the boats accepted by design for the commemorative of the Golden Globe solo circumnavigation race coming up.
A family of 5 recently finished a circumnavigation in one, though that would be a little tight quarters for me.

People have a lot of opinions on the Westsail, but most of those people have never owned one and at best have limited sailing experience on one.
This boat is not mine, but my boat is a Westsail 32 and I love it (family of three are very comfortable on her). Here are the specs on the model...
WESTSAIL 32 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

You have a tall order and very specific wants/needs. Good luck. I hope you find your boat if this isn't something you're interested in

You either Love a Westsail, or you don't. To me they are sort of polar opposites to a Catamaran.
Me, I love them due to the design and build quality of the hull, Is this one a factory boat or owner finished?

I like them but I know they are SLOW SLOW SLOW and Hobby HORSEY AND Deck WARSH! AND glunck on shallow places and moving easily on a dime. Otherwise they are great boats if there is wind

It is hull number 300, but I do not know.
I did ask though, and will report back when I do know.
It does have a standard factory configuration though, except for the nav table.

Mine is hull 192, a factory 1974 model.
Strangely my Westie does not have a standard interior.
It was redone for an oyster crew working coastal Maine in the late 70's.
Kind of a cool arrangement.
A pilot berth both port and starboard, with a table (with leafs) off center to port.

Slow and hobby horsey are all about how you sail them and how you load them.
Like I said, most people who formulate such opinions on the Westsail never owned one or had enough experience with one to change balance and experiment with sail trim.
Is it a racer?
No, but it is a race winning design actually.
I have no problems with water on deck.
Most people that do don't have the hawsepipe, or have it blocked.
You can also add a cockpit coaming if it is still a problem.
I do not have cockpit coaming, and I am generally not bothered by the Wetsnail effect.
I do not have problems with maneuverability or grounding either.
The rudder is large enough to really command an effect when necessary.
The draft is 5 feet.
Not exactly a deep hull. LOL

I guess your opinion on a particular boat is a lot different when you own one for a while. LOL

Either way, just trying to help.
Good luck, I really do hope you find what you're looking for

Re: 33FT Cruising Sailboat On A $30k Budget

I'm led to believe that they really are not that slow, if sailed well and with the correct sails.
Hobby horse I think has a lot to due with how they are loaded, I believe back in the day it was common to overload them, because you could, so people did.
They are wet, and have a small cockpit, but again I'm led to believe solving the wet at least in the cockpit isn't all that hard.

All boats of course have weaknesses, but it it hits the proverbial fan, I'd rather be in a Westsail than many of the newer boats.
They seem to have a penchant of surviving non survivable situations, even by themselves.

I had a good Boat Broker friend in Annapolis who sailed one 32 down to Argentina then back up across the Hotlantic then down to the canal and over to Australia then looped back around up and flipped toward Hawaii and SF where he sold it and bout a Hunter in Annapolis. :P

Nice boat.

I liked the 28 too.

They are balsa cored but well built. Some may have some issues but overall this is not the case, or at least no more than any other quality build.
