OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Just installed a fresh RaspiOs version 64 bits for Arm on my RPI 4.

Did the normal installation for OpenCPN with ppa:

did not work.

If I looked in the server setting the version seems to be: hirsute

Never heard of such a version. What goes wrong here ?

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Never heard of such expression (hirsute), I think that OpenCpn does not have hair, old and disordered in any way. It may have some way that other program do not have, but in some way it is more advance than many. Be carefull about your expressions.
Regards.

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

It is indeed an Ubuntu version. Never heard of this version. How is it possible that the ppapencpn/opencpn comes up with this new Ubuntu version in the server settings ?

Ubuntu 21.04 code-named Hirsute Hippo

But trying to install then I get the message No release version available .

This the version I have used:

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Seems allready available for testing on a RPI ARM64

Preinstalled desktop image

The preinstalled-desktop image allows you to unpack a preinstalled version of Ubuntu onto a target device.

Raspberry Pi Generic (64-bit ARM) preinstalled desktop image

Not yet tried/

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Just installed this Hirsute Hippo 21.04 version on my RPI 4 and also installed OpenCPN and can confirm this works very well. Although no plugins are visible.

This Hippo runs very fast.

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Installed the SignalK server with first the installation of NPM.

Works with direct input of SignalK to the OpenCPN.

Tried the OpenPlotter extra's . Now here is a complain about python-configparser missing.

See image of the Hippo working with OpenCPN and MXTommy KIP from SignalK.

Hirsute is not going to be a long term support release. Current LTS release of Ubuntu is Focal. See

I know, it is still in pre beta. But certainly the next version after the Groovy Gorilla.

I'am always interested in new developments and the Hirsute sets probable the trend
with the latest kernel version and grafics, I prefer 64 bits software for the RPI.

I only use this at home.

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Just tried the Oesenc plugin. Oesenc_pi-4.2.14_ubuntu-gtk3-arm64-20.04.1.deb.

This also works after installing libusb-0.1.-4. I also installed libusb-1.0-0

Now also the Oesenc charts with Oesenc dongle works in OpenCPN.

And this latest Ubuntu version (still beta) works very fast.

The only thing that does not work are the OpenPlotter add-ons because the file python-configparser is no longer available and is no longer needed in the latest Python versions.

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

Now using this Ubuntu beta Hirsute Hippo 64 bits for some time. There are still daily updates to improve the software.

But I have never seen a probleem.

Works great with OpenPlotter 5.2.4 Focal version. With SignalK server en MxTommy for the display of the instrument sets.

It has a nice graphic interface with easy to touch icons for touch screens.

All this is running on an RPI 4 with 2 GB.

It is a pity that it does not work with the OpenPlotter add-ons. The Groovy Gorilla does work with the OpenPlotter items.

And all this software is running from an usb3 SSD drive with the RPI without SD card.

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

A nice feature is also "Auto-hide Dock". Then you get OpenCPN on the full screen.

Re: OpenCPN version: hirsute ?

I found this package on the bionic Ubuntu package server and installed it manually. After that I was able to install the opencpn package.

Unfortunately the "Check system" is not working without any message.

Try libwxgtk3.0-gtk3-0v5

With Focal (and Hirsute) the gtk2 library is obsolete.
This means you'll have to at least install the Focal version of OpenCPN (Ubuntu 20.04) and the corresponding libwxgtk-version.

Good luck.
