Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

i upgraded my back-up nav computer to 4.8.0 and am getting a weird reaction when shutting down the computer with O still running.

i get a message that says...
The intruction at 0x6492240f referenced memory at 0x000000d4. The memory could not be read.

it asks me to click OK to terminate the program, and then it shuts down.

shut down is fine if i close O before shutting down.

i tried reinstalling 4.8.0, still happens. altho when i launched O from the installer by checking the box, shut down went fine. but when i next started O from the task bar, i consistently get the shut down error.

i'm running under W7 Pro 64 bit.

any ideas? thanks

It is a pain but try doing a clean install. Check in control panel that all related OCPN programs are uninstalled. I had a problem with incompatible plug ins still being installed.

BlueGil,

It isn't recommended to let the system kill OpenCPN. It should work but it risks damaging some data files. Better to shut down O manually to better protect its data files.

I will check if I can reproduce your symptoms.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Bluegill,

Can you do something to help find the problem?

1) With OpenCPN not running find the file C:\ProgramData\OpenCPN\opencpn.log and delete it.

2) start OpenCPN normally and let it run for a few minutes then shut down your system.

3) power on the computer and copy the file C:\ProgramData\OpenCPN\opencpn.log and rename the copy C:\ProgramData\OpenCPN\opencpn.pdf

4) upload the renamed file as an attachment to a message here.

here 'tis. i have also found that the first time O runs after an install, the problem doesn't occur. but does every time after that.
Attached Files
File Type: pdf opencpn.pdf (3.7 KB, 33 views)

Thanks for the file. It indicates that OpenCPN exited normally with no errors. I am not sure what other thing could be causing the error. Possibly the Garmin GPS driver could be the cause but there is no way to now for sure from what we know. It just does not seem to be OpenCPN itself is responsible.

well thanks for looking into it. i'll just close O before shutting down, that's best practice anyway.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Hi,
Since I updated my windows 10 system, O is performing very bad.
For obvious reasons I won' t let the the box which I use on my ship connect to the internet. Now, during wintertime, I thought it was safe to do some updating.
When I launch O the actions zooming in and out and moving the chart are performing very very slow, if at all.
Other apps on the pc behave normally.
I reinstalled O 4.8.0 but to no avail. I uninstalled the updates, but again no improvement.
I am considering to wipe the disk completely and move to linux. But there are a few arguments which are keeping me off it.
So I'd like to try to repair O. Problem is I don' t know how.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

When you uninstalled OpenCPN, how did you do it?

A good approach to follow:
- Go to the ProgramFiles "OpenCPN" folder, and use the uninstall programs, preferably starting with the plugins, and ending with the OpenCPN.
- Check that the "opencpn" initialization folder of program data has been removed. Otherwise, do it manually.
- Use the CCleaner software to clean the PC and in particular also clean the Windows registers.
- Download OpenCPN again and all the plugins you need.
- Install OpenCPN.
- Run OpenCPN to verify that the operation is correct.
- Install, one by one, the plugins you need.
- Run each plugin before installing another one.

And this method will certainly allow you to understand when things stop working. Can be a plugin is involved.

I wish you all well again.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Try options->display and in advanced options turn off OpenGL.

Probably windows installed and old gl driver that is slowing graphics. It has nothing to do with O.

Thanks for your reply.
I reinstalled OpenCPN simply by executing the .exe script, without uninstalling first.
I will try your suggestion.

OpenGL was turned off. I know missing drivers for OpenGL can cause problems in Windows sometimes.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.0 Released

Save your opencpn.ini to a new name opencpn.ini.old and restart.

Uninstall all external plugins and update them one at time and test.

Also I always update the chart database for good measure
