Tried to connecting to an XP computer, but still said cable was unplugged.

Somehow the 172... address did not get set up. Or, at least, the gradar_pi cannot find it.

Interfaces available on this computer are:
10.50.10.123/24
127.0.0.18

Take a look at your tcp/ip settings, and see if you can get that 172... address to appear.

Thanks for such a late and quick reply.
I actually did check that same window (but the windows 7 version), and do have the 172 address in that advanced window. I'll confirm again in the morning, and will check my power at the scanner. I'm able to monitor current drain on my battery bank with a Link meter, and there is no change in current draw when I power the scanner on, either at the breaker, where I wouldn't expect to see much, or at the switch on pin 5 of the Amp adapter. Gotta climb the mast in the am.

We tried to configure an XP computer, to the same results.
I had to cut the RJ45 plug off one end to run the cable, and suspected the new one I crimped on. I cut it off, left enough lead to check continuity of each wire. It was fine. Crimped on a new one.
Rechecked the wire order, 568B on the end I cut. Check.
Checked the IP address advanced window as per your image above, ours shows the correct IP address, like the 172..... of yours.
Climbed the mast. Checked voltage to the scanner: 13.1 volts.
Checked RJ-45 connection to the scanner. It was OK and reseated.
Checked the wiring order of the RJ-45 plug at the scanner: 568A.
Is this supposed to be a crossover cable? The jumper cables I use from the Amp adapter to the PC are are all 568B configuration at both ends. Am I wired correctly? No matter what we try, we get the same error when switching to MASTER mode:

The connections page still says we have a cable unplugged, whether the cable is unplugged, plugged in with and without the scanner on switch on.

Is there any packing material inside the scanner that needs to be removed?
I didn't open up the scanner.
I notice that when I click the radar button, it goes green for a second or two, then back to red, the pi log indicates tx, then no scanner activity, and reverts back to searching.
Do I need to open up the cover and do anything inside? Instruction manual didn't say anything....

Another observation:
When reviewing the instruction manual, Garmin does specify a crossover cable. One end A, other end B.
Garmin's designation of A and B are opposite from what I find for standard 568 A and B on line.......I'm sure this isn't an issue, but according to the Garmin instructions. I have the B end plugged into the scanner and the A end in the Amp adapter.

I tried it, no good.
I didn't think it would react differently as Network Connections still indicates 'network cable unplugged'
Still behaving like the scanner is dead. I wonder if I need to open it up?
What else?

Almost certainly NOT a scanner hardware or wiring problem.
The problem is with your computer's TCP/IP settings.

The gradar PlugIn cannot find the 172... address.

The Radar Overlay PlugIn is unable to directly control the radar scanner.
Scanner is located at ip address: 172.16.2.0
Interfaces available on this computer are:
10.50.10.123/24
127.0.0.18

Until gradar finds a 172... address in this list, then it will be unable to access the scanner.

Try disabling all TCP/IP V4 addresses except 172....

Step away from the hardware....

Hi Dave,
First, thanks for the Saturday support. Greatly appreciated.
Second, I'll try to avoid the hardware. I'm a retired Mechanical Engineer, so if all I have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. The 'we' I keep referring to is wife Cindy, a retired Software Engineer. So I'm quite well covered.
I disabled every other IP address in V4 and everything else as you suggested. Rebooted the PC, to no avail. Even used the command prompt to ping both 172.16.1.1 and 172.16.2.0... No answer from either one.
Not sure what else to try on the S/W side.
As a last resort, I could pull down the scanner drag it to a buddy's boat, get a crossover cable and plug it into his Garmin chartplotter. He has the same scanner. I'd rather not do this, so what next? Other ways to force the TCP/IP settings?

Maybe you are already doing it, but i just got Mine hooked up and running, I have to Turn the Scanner on before the Opencpn Program, Than when you turn the Opencpn program on, it automaticaly reconises the Scanner and connects to it, also make sure to Right cllick on the Radar menu and make sure it is in the Master mode.

If i Start the Opencpn program than turn on the scanner, it wont let me use the master mode, I get the message that it is unable to directly control the radar scanner.
Scanner is located at ip address: 172.16.2.0

So than i restart the Program with the Scanner on, and it connects to the scanner with no problem.

So i just try to rember to turn the scanner on before the Program

That is the way i do it anyway, i do not know if it is the right way, but it works for me.

I really like mine so far.It is a facinating set up once you get familiar with it, i am not a computer wiz, it takes me time to figure things out, i am still learning myself.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the input. We did try that, to no avail.
We are running Trend Micro internet security and use Windows firewall.
Can this bet stopping us? Does anyone else have these protections running?
We just set a rule on inbound and outbound traffic in the firewall to allow the 172 addresses. No help. Also turned off Internet security and firewall. No help.
Still trying to ping the ip addresses, no answer.

It is possible that the software you have maybe conflicting, I have a dedicated Desktop on my Boat for navigation, no other programs,no router or firewall, i use Nortons when i download The nav programs off the internet, i find that the simpler the better, like i say i am not a computer wiz, more of a Trial and error, but thanks to Dave and Chucks input,and lots of reading the Instrucions, I think i have most of the bugs worked out, I have been trialing and erroring since Oct, makeing it work a little better each time. But is worth it, and you will get it eventually,i know its frustrating. It sure beats a Gray Screen Radar, although in the Fog i will be using both.

Hi Matt

When you replaced the connector on the Garmin network cable did you connect the drain wire to the new connector? The switch on the Amphenol plug connects pin 5 to this drain wire from the scanner. If that drain is not connected to the Amphenol plug then the switch does nothing.
