OpenCPN has slowed down. Too many charts?

Well, when I got OpenCPN in early-September it was fast. I downloaded the RNC and ENC charts for Puget Sound, and the west coast south to Oregon. Then I took my boat out yesterday for 3-1/2 miles and used autofollow.

Since then my HP ProBook with 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD has s l o w e d d o w n to the point that every keystroke takes 4.33 seconds to register. I deleted the autofollow track but that made no difference.

Now I'm beginning to think I have too many charts loaded.

About once per week my ability to display Vector charts goes away and all I can see is those ugly "scanned" RNC charts. Then somehow they come back mysteriously. I decided to delete all the RNC from the Chart Options list. My RNC and ENC charts are in separate directories in the lower pane and when I highlight any folder and do "Delete Group" nothing happens. What I mean is, the folder goes away, but the raster charts still appear on my display -- no matter how many times I rebuild the database.

It is not very likely that you have too many charts for the specs of your machine - No matter how many there are in total, only a few actually are displayed at any given time (How many you know from the number of colored rectangles on the chart bar at the bottom of the screen).

I am a little afraid you are not using the chart grouping functionality correctly. Regardless of how many chart groups you created or deleted or whatever, the "group" selected by default (until you change it by right clicking on the chart canvas and selecting a different one from the menu) is the "All Active Charts" one, which contains all the charts you have on your system.

Now to what could help you... You sure want to play with the OpenGL settings on the Display -> Advanced tab in the toolbox.
If the "Use Accelerated Graphics (OpenGL)" checkbox is not checked, activate it. If it still won't help, go back to the same place, click on the Options... button next to it and unselect the polygon and line smoothing checkboxes on the dialog shown. And in case OpenGL is activated, of course try to deactivate it (and look for updated drivers for the graphic card in your machine)

Nohal, That did it! I now have all vector charts.

But as to the slowness, GL graphics was already enabled, but I deactivated polygon and line smoothing. That helped a little, not much.

I think it might have something to do with not having a graphics card in my machine. The video memory is "shared" in the RAM, apparently. I don't know if it's possible to 'block out' a section of RAM for the exclusive use of graphics. I know I have 2 partitions, one for 'system' and one for everything else.

I suspect you have not deleted the RNC charts from the Options/Charts/Chart Files/Directories list. Deleting the Chart Group did not delete the Directory(Path) to the RNC charts on the system.


And I suggest you do away with the RNC charts altogether. Use the ENC charts and also be sure to click on the 'Prepare all ENC Charts' button.

It's only a matter of carefully manipulating the section of "Chart Groups"

You won't be using the main "Chart Files section" There you can load all you want, Enc's, Rasters and so on.
When you are on the main navigation screen, all you have to do is, right click your mouse and the window that opens will show a menu, almost at the end you will see the "Chart Groups" created; Another window will open with the names of the Active Charts you've created
Choose the one you want to use and that's it
I have the biggest one which is CM93_2 2010, when I load that one my Notebook does not slow down at all.
Too bad I can't load images to help but I hope I got the message across

This laptop, an HP ProBook 6470b, has Intel HD Graphics 4000 renderer "shared" with RAM. The driver date is reportedly the latest, 12/21/2015. When I compared the file sizes each chart is about 2MB and there are 88MB of them in total, versus a "physical" video memory of 32MB. But it says there's 1620MB of "virtual" video memory. I'm unable to find mention of any GPU on this machine and suspect it doesn't have one.

I append here, my log file. Note that the "stencilbuffer" and "Vertexbuffer Objects" have been disabled; I don't know what this is saying, it just seemed important somehow. Or not (?). Does this log file look "normal" to you?

I am in Valencia Spain at this time so probably we are on a 6 hour lapse from Eastern time. Anyway, I looked at your ProBook specs and at i5 and 2.5Ggz, not bad at all, maybe your RAM Memory? Basic is 4Gb It should be at least 8. The other thing is the HD, mine is 7.2k Vs. 5.400, but I see your basic HD is 500GB x 7.2k's RPM That is of course great my NB is the same except for a speed of 2.7Ghz.
Last but not least I am using Win 10 Pro which is a lot faster and practical than Win7
I have an identical Notebook with Win 7 and the difference is quite notable
As far as OpenCPN I am relatively new at it, my other program is Maxsea 12.6 I am fed up with it even though has some great features not found on OpeCPN.
So, bottom line

1-Operating System
2-RAM Memory (I have 16Gb But is not that much faster than 8)

You definitely do want to make OpenGL work as some of the features are not available at all without hardware acceleration.

I would like to apologize to you all for not seeing or noticing your initial post with data on your HP.

I have a Toshiba Portege R930 with exactly the same Intel 4000 GPU. I would update with Intel the driver as suggested by Ryan
Your 128Gb HD is a bit short in capacity and I would get a type 3 Memory card with another 128Gb Prices have considerably gone down with these cards
Windows 10 you can configure settings to avoid the automatic downloads and installation, another pain in the neck is the screen oriented towards the use of touch screen. After installing Win10, get Ivo software's "Classic Shell" at Classicshell.net (free)and you're back in business.
Like I said we have similar equipment and I don't have speed issues

Intel Graphics 4000 has problems with OpenGl, specifically with glFinish() and possibly also glFlush(). I had identical problems as described here, solved after removing all glFinish() from OpenCPN. Disabling "Show FPS" in OpenGl options also helps, this function frequently calls glFinish().

Actually this is not true. You can ask for messages/prompts before updates, and tell it not to upgrade until you decide. Look into updates

If this is really the case, then we should detect this for intel graphics and not use glFlush or glFinish the same way vertex buffer, and stencil are disabled...

I also suspect that vertex buffer objects probably works with the latest intel drivers, at least with some cards. It would be worth trying, it should speed up vector graphics.

Otherwise, I will admit, that despite years of optimization, OpenCPN is still very slow for what it does. It's not so easy to make it faster but there are a lot of ways. It just takes a lot of development time to get each small gain.

Some changes have been integrated recently that significantly slow me down on the raspberry pi. I think the difference isn't noticed for everyone. For example, SVG support makes it take 17 seconds to start OpenCPN instead of 7, which is ridiculous and slows development. On a different machine the difference might be less than a second.
