Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Hi there, I had v4.1.915 on my samsung note 10.1, all fine for a while, then I started getting black screens immediately after opening the prog. I removed it and did a re-install, now opencpn opens but I can't get at my vector charts. On opening I get a box to the right of the cpn logo which says raster, if I tap it, it shows a drop down with vector and the folders for the charts but (a) it doesn't stay open long, and (b) it wont open my chart files, only the base map that comes with the prog. Question is where should I put my chart files. I have noticed thing seem to be running slower since I had the black screen issue, so has something gone missing? Any help? Thanks in advance.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Hello Dave,

I need to know what to say about French forum about OpenCPN beta versions for Android.

Many users complain that their versions to stop functioning since October 1. The idea is generally expressed that you would voluntarily pre-programmed while the obsolescence of the different versions.

Are there codes used in the voluntary restraint from you on the duration of use of the different versions?

Best regards.

Gilletarom.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

i was using and loved it as we had Google Earth on it and could use when entering and exiting bays/rivers in Queensland. However, it stopped working and despite reinstalling, will now not work. I can also not find the application anywhere now.

What is happening to it?

hi dave,

is it true that all previous beta releases can no longer be usable on our android devices since you release the paid version?

No point in whinging about it. Y'all begged for an android version of OpenCPN 'cause you wanted a quick and easy one click installation. You got it. Shouldn't be surprised either that the .apk ends up being distributed through Google Play. Granted, developers have a choice between pay and play or free, but it's their choice. If I'd spent many hours developing the app, I'd appreciate a return on my time and effort, too.

I spent many hours keeping an effort to bring OpenCPN to owners of android devices alive too. With input from a handful of folks we got the built in and external GPS types to work, making OpenCPN a free, useable navigation program on androids.

If you truly need all the OpenCPN features, buck up and pay for the .apk.

Otherwise, you can follow my instructions here: Building on Motorola Xoom | Official OpenCPN Homepage and enjoy using not only OpenCPN, but other linux programs like zyGrib and uncountable other open source, free applications.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1dy98qniyi...1.718.apk?dl=0

Changelog:
33. Correct small scale ownship position rendering
34. Improve StatusBar font and size selection logic.
35. Improve Tide/Current detailed display dialog layout.
36. Correct Vector chart symbol rendering to avoid display fading on certain devices.
37. Various display and useability improvements.

Release Beta 4.1.718

Release Notes:

There is very little new functionality in this Beta.
The intent is to further stabilize the GUI, and improve the general "daily drivability" of the app.

Consequently, I would like testers to be fussy, and even compulsive, about the useability of this release. Any "unexpected" UI events are worthy of mention, please. Especially hangs or crashes....

We are nearing the point of "Feature Freeze" for OA 4.2, so if there is some Feature that you can't live without, now would be a good time to mention it.

Please check and clear your Flyspray tasks for the OA Beta, if possible. I will unilaterally clear some older issues that are known to have been resolved in previous Betas, if you don't mind.

Thanks in advance for all your valuable feedback.
Good luck
Dave

The file on the dropbox link has apparently been removed.
2nd question: is there any minimum HW/SW requirement for Android opencpn:
- Does Android 4.2.2 suite fine?
- Is Cortex A9 Dual Core 1GHz / 512MB RAM sufficient?

Thank you,

Fabrizio

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Hi Dave

I cannot seem to get onto the android support page. It just stops at a blank white page with the URL at the top.

The android version looks great. Everything seems to work really well, other than I cannot view the CM93 charts. I see from this forum a few others have had the problem, and I am sure there is a fix.

Thanks
Melvin

pirate Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Hi everyone
I'm new to OpenCPN as I sail on a mini-transat 6.50 wich is not adapted for PC. But here is OpenCPN for Android.
This is a very good news and a great job. Thanks for it.
My purpose is to contribute as far as I can. Never to be negative.
My idea is you have a great product, to be successlull on Androïd it has to be as simple & ready to use as possible!

First step, check my current understanding :
The Android UI is slightly different from the Windows one, the corresponding doc/help is not available yet! Is this correct?
2 plugings are available for the moment : WMM & ChartDownloader. This means AIS, Grib, Routing ... are not available yet on Androïd? Are there any dates?
Where should I look for Charts (Raster &/or Vector (better)) for Britany (France West) to test?
How shall I use the dropbox link to install and test the beta on my Android Tab (Samsung TabS 10.5)?

Thanks for the time I'll use to read and answer me.

You might consider OpenPlotter as an alternative:OpenPlotter RPI | Sailoog

Thanks for your answer. This means no plugin is requiered for AIS which was not obvious for me based on the doc.

Am I wrong or not for Grib and Rooting? They need plugins ? Still to be adapted to Andoïd?

Have a nice day or night, based on where you are!!

Thanks for your interessting answer.
It seems that OpenPlotter is a "package" based on OpenCpn + additionnal stuff.
I must look at it more carefully to fully understand on what OS does it run (Android or not), on what hardware (existing Tab or only special devices, ...)

And does it answer to the basic functionnalities I fell necessary. OpenCPN with its existing (on Windows/Unix) plugins should be ok as soon as they run on Android.

Best regards

Plug-ins for Android have to be "hardwired" into the app.
AIS is a basic function, not a plug-in. Grib is a plug-in that comes with the basic OCPN.

Weather routing or plug-ins for commercial charts are not available for Android.
That's why I suggested to have a look at the OpenPlotter/Raspberry project. It is more flexible and should be well suited for your type of applications.
OpenPlotter is a Linux running on Raspberry. You will need to add some display, a case etc. And it will integrate easily(?) with any sensor you might use.
You can get an AIS receiver for very little money as well based on a software defined USB stick.

Obviously Android is an alternative if you are conscious about it's limitations (and satified with those).
