Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.604 Released

MasalaChai,

I have once tested the iPhone 3G with: Making your iPhone look like a NMEA GPS receiver with gpsd and WiFi or Bluetooth | spench.net
and gpsd at OpenCPN.
But only as a backup in case my marine GPS gets broken.

You cannot use the data and charge cable of the iPhone for transferring GPS data. You can use WiFi only. See the link I have posted.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.604 Released

OK Gerhard, have been reading about this and the link you gave.. getting a bit wiser. Very helpful, many thanks.
Is it better to simply buy a dedicated GPS receiver - there seem to be several at around £25 - 30?
And what are the most suitable low current draw laptop/notebooks available these days to use on the boat for opencpn?

The New Grib plugin.
There is an optional overlay map choice: "QuickScat".
This is strange since QuickScat is no longer operational. It stopped working years ago.
If we could get the nearest thing, ASCAT, working it would be great. Probably not that easy as there are no ASCAT gribs available, as far as I know.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.604 Released

Thomas, I agree with the idea, in Climate Database thread we had bookmarked
STAR/Atos and some others. With these new satellites coming on line there may more data available that will be useful.

I wonder if Grib or Climatology should use them. Grib is usually forecast, while Climatology is an average of what actually happened (montly right now).

Climatology = actual averaged monthly,
Grib = Forecast & Predictive generally in Days.

Maybe we need to think about take climatology into another mode (recent daily, say for the last month) as well as monthly averaged over years. I wonder what Sean would think.

The reason I was interested in ATOS was trying to get a handle on the data and dewpoint conditions required for Fog.

Hi Thomas

You are right,
This option although invisible, existed in the old version and has been reproduced but is no longer useful, so we have to cancel it

Jean Pierre, Is it still possible to compile the current Grib_pi with all the added features, in Opencpn v3.3.0? Thanks.

Thomas...
Confirmed, we have to return focus to the chart canvas there. Looks like there will be a few more places with a similar behaviour...

Sorry I don't understand well the question
All added features are in opencpn/master and can be compiled

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.604 Released

Just tried to compile Grib_pi (current version that compiles in Opencpn 3.3.604)
in Opencpn 3.2.0 so that folks using 3.2.0 could use the update version.

The only way I could think to do this was to go into my local git repository for Ocpn 3.2.0 and rename grib_pi to grib_pi_old. Then copy girb_pi from my local repository for Ocpn 3.3.604. Is this an acceptable way to do it? Then try cmake .. cmake --build . and MSVC Debug 3.2.0.

I get cmake --build . output errors with 1 failing (grib_pi):

Don't know if this is a fruitless idea, there are "unresolved externals" so it appears the code has moved on. Is that correct?

If you read post #1 in this thread, the 3.3.604 release announcement, you will see that the Plugin APi has moved on since 3.2.2.
Plugins, written to use features in the new API, version 1.10, will not compile or work with 3.2.2.
