OpenCPN and Androïd

Hi guys,

I'm regarding to buy an Android tablet PC (Samsung Galaxy).
And I thunk that it should be great to have OpenCPN working to navigate!

What do you think about?

I would pass on the Samsung Galaxy until Adroid is updated. Read all the blogs and I dont think you will want one now.

If you need navigation for Android then OruxMaps (OruxMaps) is the absolute winner. And it's free. Software to create charts from BSB3-calibrations is there also, so you can reuse your BSB3-charts from Opencpn.

My hope is that cyanogen or other rom shop produced a fully functioning android build for the barnes and noble nook color....$250 for a 7" color full android tablet!!!

I am waiting to hear more about the NotionInk Adam, a tablet that will have the Pixel Qi display. This display can work in three modes, transmissive color, Transflective Color, and Reflective Monochrome. That last mode is great in full sunlight, gets better the brighter it is, and uses 1.5w to power the display, leading to long battery times. The are shipping the first ones out in the beginning of January. Hope it is a winner!!!

OpenCPN seems to use wxWidgets for drawing its screens etc. So whilst the background navigation code is probably portable to Android, it depends on whether there is an Android wxWidgets version for drawing the windows.

I not that there now seems to be wxWidgets for iPhone.

iPhone - as well as iPad - has the iOS operating system which uses Cocoa as developing tool. wxWidgets is available only for the outdated Carbon, the old developing tool for Mac OS X.

The pricing on those Android tablets makes it a pretty sexy proposition. A 10.1 touchscreen costs more than a 10.1 Android tablet. If you had OpenCPN running on it, what a great nav system that would be if integrated into the nav station. (And maybe a 7" tablet with remote capabilities for the cockpit.) I'm guessing it's a bit early for that still though. I'll keep it in the "someday" list.

There is still some problems with some logic in the display layers, so making a port to anything outside wxWidgets are a big work.
