open cpn

Travelling in the pacific northwest and was using a 4.1.1 version with canadian charts and displaying charts properly but app kept crashing and not responding to zoom control.
I decided to upgrage to 4.4 on my windows 10 laptop and the canadian charts are not displaying anymore.

any suggestions

Re: open cpn

I have 4.0 and it works without issue. Am a little afraid to install anything more recent after seeing a rash of problem posts. Like any software, the more bells and whistles and general maintenance, the more difficult the software is to maintain. Being a software engineer, I have seen this over and over for that last 40 years. Progress does not always mean improvement.

If you're Canadian charts are like mine, you may have to go through a whole new installation and registration process. The other possibility is that you may need to re-install the BSB4 PlugIn. Check on the "settings" > "PlugIns" tab to see if it is there. If not, you'll need to install it.

Well, 4.4.0 is way more stable than 4.0 was as far as I can tell. And not installing it and not reporting problems, if any found, will probably not help us make it any better...

Re: open cpn

1) download it from PlugIns for OpenCPN 4.2 and 4.4 | Official OpenCPN Homepage
2) run the installer
3) follow it's instructions

Re: open cpn

Fb Get on opencpn.org and find it!
Don't be lazy about this. There are lots of resources there, seriously.
Thanks.

.

I did all that and charts come up and gps works fine: However the software really is badly misbehaving.

I run it side by side with my old laptop running on win 7 with older version of open and my newer laptop windows 10 with open 4.4 is hanging up constantly and zooming functions does not respond and trying to move screen with click and drag hangs up and even shutting down is a problem.

I rebooted my laptop a couple of times but no improvement. This is not a complaint but I was so satisfied with my older machine for 4 years that I can't believe I cannot get 4.4 to work on a great machine. Dell SS drive 17 inch screen etc.

Let me know if it is me or that is what it is

Cheers, Frank

Re: open cpn

Frank...
We have no idea about the hardware of your great new machine or the configuration of OpenCPN on it and type of charts used, we also can hardly imagine what "even shutting down is a problem" means, but.
If you are not using OpenGL accelerated graphics (Toolbox->Display->Advanced), turn it on and if your charts a raster, build the texture cache. If you are using it and the performance is bad, have a look if there are new graphics drivers available for your machine - especially those for Intel GPUs are famous for being very buggy, most of all on Windows 10, or try turning OpenGL off.

The open GL graphics turn on fixed it.

Much appreciated.

Will test tomorrow in open waters and will let you.

Very helpful thank you so much

Re: open cpn

Frank
This behavior may be associated with an older opencpn.ini file. It has happened to me while testing plugind, and then upgrading as you have done.

Rename opencpn.ini toopencpn.ini.old.
Then start opencpn again and re-estabish your typical settings.
It should start to behave as you expect.

Re: open cpn

Pavel you are a genius: turning on what you suggested fixed everything

If you are not using OpenGL accelerated graphics (Toolbox->Display->Advanced), turn it on

Thanks a million: When I'm done with my trip I'll make sure I send money to open CPN
