Re: New Grib Presentation

Jean Pierre, I thought I had entered another note directly afterwards, sorry for the confusion. The problem was in Linux, and when I had shut down some programs and started to shut down Linux, the email window popped up! So it must be working, but this new user to linux is not doing something right..... Maybe I had to shut down Linux to get it to initiate for some reason. I think your English is a heck of a lot better than my French!

Jean Pierre,
How difficult would it be to read a second grib file concurrently, and add that data to the data values window, such that Weather routing would have access to both Noaa Wind Gribs and Noaa Currents (Rtofs)? It would be really sweet.... or maybe even just a utility that would join two grib files?

Re: New Grib Presentation

I seem to remember some key-mouse combo that would draw a rectangle to define the grib area desired...something like alt-click and drag mouse to create a rectangle... or was that in qtVlm. In any case, that was very handy.

I have been trying to figure out what determines the points the Saildocs email uses. Is it the last two points you click before requesting the grib? I've tried that and it partly works...

Actually the grib area is that you are seeing when you click on the mail button : lat max - lon min - lat min - lonmax are taken and rounded to the above entire degree.
So to define the desired area , first drag and zoom. To do that the 'small step zoom' with CTRL is very useful , mainly for Zygrib request where the file size is limited to 2 Mb
Then when you see you area well centered in the screen you can click on the button

Re: New Grib Presentation

JP Thank you. Two new tricks!
1. Grib Area = Chart View Area rounded to entire degrees. Use drag and zoom.
2. Small step zoom by using CTRL and + or -

I was wondering how to get smaller incremental scaling steps. Thanks again.

Not yet looking at the difficulties , but just about logical point of view :
A second file is read:
If he contains another data type than the first one it is easily understandable that we take all data from the first plus all data from the second .
but if it contains the same data type : what do we do ? take the better ones ? but how to choose ? is there a main file and a secondary one ? in this case we can take the data types contained in the first one and add data missing from the second one ?
Other idea ?

JP, How about?

Quote:

-Use all the data types contained in the first main grib, and then add any new data types available from the second one.

...Just to keep it simple. Often it is the same source anyway (Noaa, or whatever)
and the user will have to exercise care about the start and end date/times for the gribs.

Re: New Grib Presentation

Hi,

I am playing now with new_grib 2.2 on ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 32bit and I found two problems:

1. If I try to send grib request to Saildocs nothing is happened. Thunderbird configured and tested.

2. On "Write and send GRIB request setting" the Resolution and the Interval aren't visible corected.

Re: New Grib Presentation

I think it is using sendmail not the gnome email client or whatever.

There is wxEmail wxSMTP etc.. maybe it can even use a url with mailto:

Re: New Grib Presentation

Hi Kubek

Thanks for you report

I see two problems in you screen shot :
Resolution and interval unreadable, and also there is no email text displayed.
You should see the email as it is supposed to be sent, then when "send" button have been clicked, a returned massage in red.
Could you confirm you never have neither the email text nor the message ?
It is the same if you choose Zygrib ?

Could you test click on "send" , then exit OpenCPN , and look at your log file.
There could have an error message starting with "grib..."

Thanks again and sorry but I have no means to test linux

Re: New Grib Presentation

Regarding Kubek's 217 post about saildoc email.
In Linux, it would be good if we could get a little more space to show the actual values for Degree Resolution, Hour Interval, Day Range. They are very close together and don't allow enough room - will upload a screenshot

Also there is a line labeled "Mail" is there supposed to be something below that that would be related to the sending of emails? By the way, neither Saildocs or Zygrib seem to work.

I have Thunderbird loaded and working, so that I can send emails in Linux, but not recieive, perhaps there is some additional email link that I need to activate, but it does not seem to be popping up email for me yet. Will horse around some more.
===
Now I am realizing that Jean Pierre is having the same problem that Sean has in reverse. JP is working at the end of a long pole with Liinux testers telling what is happening, same deal Sean and I are doing with windows....

Maybe Sean could help Jean Pierre with this and JP could help Sean figure out the Window Tabs in Climatology? --Just a thought.

In Linux, under
System Settings > Details > Default Applications > Mail > Thunderbird.
Do not know if there are other areas of the system that require checking to see if apps can be email "aware"

Hi,

It looks like the new_grib plugin in Linux doesn't use "thunderbird client email settings" for sending email with grib request. If it try to use SMTP settings from linux system itself (NOT thundrbird one), this will be incorrect, because very often laptops with linux doesn't act as mail server itself. It have DHCP IP address which could be ignored by normal mail servers. And this method is one way communication. To who those saildoc or zygrib will send respond?
