Navionics Charts

Is it possible to use Navionics charts in OpenCPN?

Hello Don1500

Just now : NO

Extract from the User Guide :
OpenCPN User Manual

The plugin S63-PI Beta could bring you a answer in the next few month.

Re: Navionics Charts

No, the S-63 charts are a different breed.
S-57 vector charts in an encrypted trsport format.

Navionics, Garmin and Jeppesen (C-Map) have their own proprietary format.
We would need a specific plug-in as for NV-charts.

S-63 chart is giving the possibility to get official vector charts (at official prices, but that's another story).
I'm saying here "is" and not "will" - from next week on this will be reality.

Re: Navionics Charts

What other vector charts can we use when sailing in the European waters (UK, France, The Netherlands etc.)?

From very few days on the official S-63 charts. See the corresponding thread.

We invite to discuss and to ask national Hydrograhic Offices about the issue:
"S-63 charts for Non-SOLAS vessels"
Feed-back appreciated.

I might be wrong, but I think that today you can use Navionics charts with OpenCPN.
You will need the S63 Plugin and buy the Navionics chart from ChartWorld in S63 format.
Am I right?
Anyone tried this?

Re: Navionics Charts

There are "Navionics chart sets in S63 distribution format" available from ChartWorld. This is correct.
We can't confirm that the content of these charts is identical to Navionics charts for plotters or their App chart sets as we don't have the details. Or how they differ.

And there are OCPN users who licensed these charts.
These charts are bundled by Chartworld on base of content delivered by Navionics as an alternative for sailors that don't require official charts.

In the beginning of the S63 plug-in users reported problems about some features not displayed rom these charts and it showed up that Navionics was using some propietary S57 objects. We had contact with Navionics about these issues and tried to repair the situation. Then the communication from Navionics side ceased.
We don't have information if they have solved these issues. Feedback from people who licensed S63 ChartWorld Navionics sets lately would be interesting.

Re: Navionics Charts

Thanks for your answer Hubert.

I actually see some benefits with Navionics. In the north of Finland where I sail in the summers Navionics has some routes for smaller vessels marked out that I am not sure are there on the Official S63 charts. And also Navionics is much cheaper.

Do you think there will ever be a Navionics plugin available for OpenCPN?
For me that would be the best navigation solution.

Re: Navionics Charts

This depends just on Navionics. Or Jeppesen. Garmin I would disard as it seems that they are only working for their own systems. Or others...

OCPN has no allergy against anybody and is open for proactive proposals.
Goal is to have up-to-date, reliable and cost effective chart material.

Re: Navionics Charts

I've only seen Navionics used with Fugawi for PC route planning -- they have a few different tiers of software, but the issue is that Fugawi software isn't free... :-(

Hopefully a plugin for Navionics comes about soon -- would that be something Navionics would have to work on or more of an open-source thing?

This type of implementations always requires an effort on both sides. And includes a non-open part.
But just to make it clear: in this moment there are no contacts with Navionics and neither have taken place in the past. We are talking about a hypothetical option.

Re: Navionics Charts

Has there been any movement on a potential plugin for Navionics non-SOLAS?

Cheers,

No, no known activities.

And if you ask Navionics?
