I was adventurous and opened the can of worms, checked the times and dates around the dateline.
OpenCPN applies my local date to everywhere. Z+12 is still the 19:th, even though it locally is the 20:th ( Z ~ 1800 now). A bit strange but not a problem when you actually are in Z+12 as your computers local date will be used.
It also seems like my local summertime change, is applied globally.
Fiji is on Z+13 in my OpenCPN, Z+12 in real life, and the tides is an hour out. Same thing with Papeete, Tahiti, My OpenCPN says Z - 9, real life is Z - 10 and the tides are out by an hour. Same thing here, as long as you adjust your computer to the official timezone you will be right when you actually need the tide predictions.

Worse is that some stations in NZ displays Z + 1, for example Bluff.

Not so Armchair!A good point you make.Hopefully, it will occur to me in the event to doublecheck!I've been caught various time by tide prediction applications not adjusted properly between Standard and Daylight Savings... especially with George Bush having changed Daylight Savings...

I haven't heard anything from anyone from my last post. I have been using the OpenCPN on the water daily for the last week and have been having continued issues.

I took a look at the .log file and it still does not appear to be logging anything...this might be the root of the problems.

In addition to the issues I described before with the vector charts there are a couple other things.

Whenever I start the program I have to reset all of my preferences (look ahead on, chart quilting on, and assorted AIS settings). Also I have been removing the ENC chart folder from the database since they are not working but it is always there when I restart.

Also there are times when I get a black screen showing chart outlines and the boat & AIS targets. This bug seems to come and go and when I click through the charts sometimes they come back and sometimes not. otherwise I have been doing the "database rebuild" and the charts come back.

The program has also crashed several times as well causing me to lose my track. This is problematic because we are doing scientific research aboard and need reliable track data.

Hope someone can help me.

Sorry we dropped the ball on this.

Where were we: Oh yes...

The logfile is appended -to on each run of OpenCPN. Thus, the most recent entries are at the end of the file.

Suggestion: Delete the current logfile, run OpenCPN as usual, with a few chart loads/mode changes, etc. Exit OpenCPN. Then post the (much shorter) logfile here for inspection.

We will take a look as soon as it appears.

I deleted the existing log file then ran the program as you suggested and crashed it by opening an enc chart. when I looked at the log file it was empty. I also searched the HD to make sure there wasn't a second .log location and there is not.

If you run without crash, (i.e. just start and immediately exit) can you find opencpn.log anywhere? How about opencpn.txt?

I completely deleted the opencpn.log and did another session. this time it made a new .log. Here it is.

OpeCPN s installed in all the wrong places. Not the kind of error I thought was possible....

Looking at your log I think that your problem comes from not creating a normal user during the Ubuntu installation. Which is apparent from lines like this.

It would be interesting to know which user you are running as?
This command will tell:

whoami

To proceed: Create a user "todd" or whatever.
Your /home should then only contain "Lost+found" and "Todd". Everything else must go. Copy it to "Todd" or get rid of it.
Log out and log in again as your new user. Reinstall OpenCPN and you should be alright.
Read up about the sudo command. Heaps of info o the Ubuntu site.
You can also find out about creating users on he same site.
There is no reason to reinstall, but it is an alternative. Be sure to follow the on screen instructions, specially when it comes to creating at least one normal user.

I logged in as root and changed permissions on the user I have been logging in on as suggested by Dave.

This seemed to help a ton....Thanks.

So far, the only issue I have found since the permission change is that the larger scale ENC charts are loading normally but the smaller scale ENC charts do not seem to be loading.

The preferences were remembered between sessions.

I'll be on the H2O all day today to further test the system.

Tonight I will also create a new user as Thomas suggested. But I don't understand how the program can be in the wrong place when the Ubuntu software center installed the program. I thought it is supposed to take care of that stuff for you.

The install of the program is fine. The problem is reading/writing to the user's custom settings in your home directory. you need to set read-write premissions the user's ~/.opencpn/ directory. Somehow they are set wrong or to another user.

try "ls -l ~/.opencpn"

logged in as "user", to fix:

chown user.user ~/.opencpn -R
chmod a+rX ~/.opencpn -R
chmod u+w ~/.opencpn -R

as noted, creating a new user account will also fix the problem.

If a lot of changes are needed look at the man pages for "chown" and "chmod" specially the "-R" recursive option.

I am new to this forum so here goes

We have recently installed OpenCPN for use with CM93 charts and really like it. We have two problems with it, 1 the boat stays north up with no COG displayed. This in turn results in the AIS CPAs being behind the vessel instead of where they should be. 2 cannot upload from laptop to GPS.

Is the first problem because the program is not picking up the NMEA sentence from the GPS for COG. The vessel follows the track correctly on the screen.

We have been using Maxsea and upload no problem and COG no problem the GPS on board is Furuno GP32.

Could not find any help on your help file to these little problems.
