GPS simulator

Hi,
I need to be able to do some measures distances from my boat symbol to an AIS target without having a proper GPS connected.
Is there a way of setting a valid GPS position of my boat in OpenCPN?
I can of course use virtual comports and run a separate program (GPSsim) but is there an easier way?

Right click on your boat and choose measure (M) , move to the AIS target and click and you will get the distance with the measure function.

Where do you get your AIS signals from?

If you like to navigate with your boat get a GPS device and a real AIS receiver. OpenCPN is intended for navigation with boats and not as a playground for armchair users.

opencpn is free, open source and you can do whatever you like with it

You could try installing the NMEAconverter program, then put this into it to send every 1 second.

$GPRMC,123519,A,4807.038,N,01131.000,E,022.4,084.4 ,230394,003.1,W

The lat & long are in these numbers
4807.038,N,01131.000,E (48N & 011 E)

Re: GPS simulator

Or install the VDR plugin, patch the GPRMC command into a (text) file and point the VDR to it (in case you have no recorded NMEA data stream)

Re: GPS simulator

Thanks all for the info. I will try this and keep on testing.
The reason for the test is to trim AIS receivers in my system.
