GE2KAP maps are very grainy

Hi All,

I'm running Ge2KAP 30.0.5.0 and my google earth maps are coming out very grainy/pixelated in OpenCPN 4.8.6 compared to how the really look in Google Earth. any ideas why this is happening?

Re: GE2KAP maps are very grainy

Probably one of 2 things.

1. Screen resolution.
2. Incomplete loading of GE image before create chart.

See the GE2KAP help (F1) under problems for full discussion.

J805 From the screen shots I see you are comparing images at different heights. The GE2KAP chart height is determined by the area you have displayed in OpenCPN. If you raise the Google Earth altitude/height to the same area you may find them nearly the same.

Some suggestions.

1) If you go to the third screen of GE2KAP and change the GE Bottom Crop Amount to 102 it will eliminate the garbage at the bottom of the image (GE logo etc.). Be aware that the bottom of the display in OpenCPN you are using to create a chart will be cut off.

2) If you use the SAS Planet program as the source of satellite imagery you will have three sources: GE, Bing and ESRI/ArcGIS. From these three sources you can choose the best one ... often eliminating cloud cover and viewing at a lower altitude (hence better resolution). Though I don't recommend it due to areas of poor location accuracy, the Navionics Marine and Sonar charts are also available in SAS Planet.

Re: GE2KAP maps are very grainy

Hi
The same happens to me. The given explanation is not wright because I try to use exactly the same heights on GE2KAP as on GE. GE was significantly less grainy. In instruction video made by P. Higinggs there was no difference.
Could someone help with this issue.

From the two screenshots I see on GE at a much lower height than the chart show on OpenCPN so naturally it will not have the same resolution as what you are showing on GE. If you were to create the chart as it is shown on GE you will find it has the same resolution.
