French overseas territories charts

A friend tipped me off that SHOM charts for the French overseas territories are now downloadable for free in raster format. However they didn't have access to a link or means to send it to me.

I have searched in English and done my best on the SHOM sites in French but can't find anything.

Anybody got any information on this?

Chris

Chris, That's great news if it pans out. Please keep us posted on what you discover. Meanwhile, I'll contact my friend in New Cal... he's pretty well connected in the navigation realm.

Used to (pic #1), but the security breach is now closely monitored and offenders are immediately and quietly banned.
But a legal offer exists for ipad: Weather4D 2.0, where all SHOM (French Hydro service) raster charts, including those for overseas territories can be downloaded for 60 € / year (the cache of the app is limited to 1 Go, so downloading more charts will erase the oldest. This is enough to navigate e.g. the Society islands and Tuamotu in the Pacific)
See example in my post on the recent Antarctic charts threads
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-163510-2.html
Note that UK, Australia, NZ charts... are also available, each in the same price range
PS The SHOM official ENC (S63) vector charts (from Primar or Chartworld) can be viewed on OpenCpn with the S63 pluging (W, Linux, iOs) But the coverage is still patchy and the price tag for every chart is stiff (pic #2 for e.g. part of the French Pacific area)

Re: French overseas territories charts

Sounds like a good topic to keep an eye on. I'll be curious to know more.

Also, it's been a perpetual (multi-decade long) wonderment of mine, as to how often charts in such outlying areas get updated. As I know that in some places, they're nigh on as old as when they were created, by the first Europeans to travel through the area, say, a century or two ago.

And when you couple that with how quickly the underwater topography changes in some of those areas. Be it due to; storms, volcanic activity, or coral growth, etc. What was there one week, can be gone the next, & vice versa. Or so I understand it anyway.

Re: French overseas territories charts

To check which S-63 Vector charts are available for licensing there is a browser here:
http://www.iho.int/srv1/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=393&I temid=424&lang=en

One cell for 3 months (3 months means 3 months of weekly updates, charts are later on still usable) for French Polynesia is 6.99€ at Chartworld.com

Australia (AHS, Austalian Hydrographic Service) has their own S-63 charts sets that can be licensed directly using the OCPN S-63 UserPermit. Not App price level but as a bundle perhaps interesting.

Chartworld have a useless credit card processing system and for some reason are unable to accept any of my cards and can't fix it. They want me to order by email, to be invoiced etc.. Nah if they can't fix their system they don't get my custom.

I only have an ancient iPad and in any case don't like the iPad for navigation, especially in the sun it's rubbish which kind of negates its portability.

For paid electronic charts I use MapMedia on MaxSea which are good.

Chris..

if Chartworld does not work for you then the same S-63 charts are available through Admiralty or PRIMAR (their sales agents).

OH well that is a pity. I have no objection to paying for charts in fact I am fully paid up for South America and the South Pacific with C-Map charts but I would have liked a set of Raster charts for Polynesia.

Do you know what has happened to Navionics on SASPlanet? I get unauthorised when I try to view it now

They got fed up with Sasplanet users downloading millions of chart tiles for free.
See e. g. my latest post here
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...es-163674.html

PS French Shom chart from Weather4D 2.0 on my 10' Ipad. Better than nothing

I'll check out Weather4d 2.0 but not sure that it will work on my iPad.. it's a first generation device!

Cheers

Thanks. I may try PRIMAR. I did have chartworld working once an bought a couple of test charts but then they screwed up their card processing and I could no longer use them.... lot of correspondence with them all to no avail. It seems they should be called Chartworld minus the small countries that we can't be bothered with
