Some thoughts for improvments from my view:
*GRIB presentation, is it possible to have a the wind speed also presentated in colour (as in MaxSea)
*The ship icon, can there be a personal choice of icon and size (as in Fugawi)
*There are still some types of bouys and mark that are in black and white. Nice if that could be fixed.
*The GPS data . Is it possible to have the satellit view presentated inside the program (as in Fugawi) That helps a lot when setting up the computer and importing data from other nav instrument.

Thank you for a very nice program!

Thank you MarkJ,
I did not realize this feature. Since this is an important function, it would be nice to have it as an Icon. But at least the function exists and maybe one day there will be an Icon.

Improvements request

First would be to have version 4 bsb working, seems unfair that US bsb 's work but not Cdn, this means we Canucks get punished by having to purchase specialized program to run the charts.

Second request would be "course up" orientation available.

BSB 4 commercial, encrypted charts are not compatible with OpenCPN:s license.
There are BSB ver 2 Canadian chart available, but a bit dated.
Course up will be a feature of the next release. Download the 2.1.0 beta test version from link below, and help out with testing.

Hi I just installed a lot of BSB US charts. When I switched on chart outlines, it struck me that it is somewhat illogical, that the color of the chart oulines does not match the color of the chart bars in the bottom of the screen. I use the latest Beta, but I guess that it has allways been like that.
As a feature request I really would like to see a permanent very long heading line if a compass NMEA is connected.

BSB charts

I hear that the US is going to add encryption to it's BSB raster charts ? will this cause an issue with open cpn, open cpn cannot load Cdn encrypted raster charts.

Couldn't find anything online, could you post a reference?

It wouldn't make much sense this the NOAA is dedicated to publishing them openly. There's still the ENC vector charts as well (usually preferable).

Cannot find the source of the rumor, it may have come up in conversation with CHS as I was trying to get Nobeltec to install the charts, the CHS reason for encryption was that if the charts were free, then anyone could pass them around, use outdated ones and maybe gain some income from copy and re sell.(actually happened in Vancouver). big fine levied.

not sure who or what chs are, but since these charts are required to be downloadable free of charge, I can't see how passing them around could do any harm. I haven't checked the US ones, but in NZ it's a "feel free to pass around but don't charge for them" type license. Some companies do resell the US charts actually, but I guess they're formatted differently or whatever. Shouldn't worry too much.

Hi There,

For the use of OpenCPN on rivers/inland ecdis, I have some wishes for the future.
-Speed display in km/h, and this display bigger/ better visable.
This could be set in toolbox.
-Analog to display of present position in lat/lon, showing present position in riverkilometer.
For big rivers like lower Danube whole km is enough, for narrower/smaller rivers or canals one digit behind the decimal point would be very useful.
-Displaying the apropriate radio channel, for example showing name and channel of a lock when about 5 km away from this lock( Gabcikovo vhf 78)
Or when approaching a port or dock showing the name and channel of the port authorities.

I don't know how hard this is to implement, but they are just ideas.

Hi,
I would like to add another feature request for inland ecdis use;
Making it possible to push a button and the own vessel moves down offcenter appr. 1/3 or 1/4 from the bottom.
This gives a bigger view ahead of the vessel in combination with 'course up' config in toolbox.
Just like riverradars wich have this feature as well.

Waypoints

I would like to be able to add comments and/or descriptions to waypoints. Other nav programs like SeaClear and Fugawi have this capability. When they import or export their waypoints the comments/descriptions are carried along. OpenCPN seems to be able to only import the lat/lon and waypoint name.

Attached is an example of how Fugawi outputs its waypoints that include both a comment and description.

I second this feature request.
