This May Sound Silly.... Mono Cat?

so i can buy two monohull 52' aluminum hulls.
and i can get them cheaper then i can build a cat.
now 52' is shorter then we had planned, but here is my idea.
i can cut half of the top of the boat's off. make a good bridge between the two. and i have my cat....
the boats are from the 50's. very cheap, and all the wood is shot. very perfect. this would get us on the water two years sooner.
whatcha think? and i am being serious.

The boat will sail like an absolute pig, will have no resale value, you are missing huge engineering answers (how and where to support the rig for instance), and the boat will be incredibly heavy for a cat of its size.

In short, you can do it. But I think it is a really bad idea.

at less then $.93 per watt this will be the way i go.
the reason i need a cat is due to the power required to power a mono.
i am looking at 35-45hp to push a 52' mono at 4kts.
its only 15hp for a 65' cat at the same speed.
15 hp is only 11,250 watts. i was planning a 30,000-40,000 watt array.
its going to be a lot of work, but less work then assembling a kit from scratch.

Are you talking about two displacement hulls? You won't realize the advantage you are describing if that's the case. What is the hull speed of the aluminum hulls?

And on a smaller scale, someone here in Vancouver came up with, and began marketing a "kit" which would convert two canoes into a "sailing catamaran." flop.

You really need to read some books or take some classes before you start cobbling boats together.

If you bolt two fat planing hulls together as a catamaran they don't magically lose most of their drag. Catamarans require less power to move for a few reasons, one of the more important is their individual hulls have a high length to beam ratio, typically 8:1 or higher.

If you were to take one hull and split it down the centerline, add a flat side, then put the flat sides on the outboard. Then it would be closer to a Hobbie.
