I too put the gx1700 under the deck and it works fine as long as I open the main hatch a bit. I debated getting the one with the AIS receiver but since I do plan on getting the Vesper Watchmate, I figured I wouldn't need that much redundancy.

Ihave the SH 2200 mounted just under the deck next the compression post and it works great. Takes about 10-15 seconds to get a fix. Very pleased with it!

Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes it takes lesser (depending on what all has to be dismantled/re-assembled to route the cable).
