Pactor Modem Inspection

Hello All:

Looking for some of the communications expertise. I recently purchased a Pactor Modem II ex with Pactor III firmware Ebay. I guess I wasn't thinking clearly b/c I have no way of checking it until I go up to my boat in April/May. This will be well past the reurn period. Does anyone know of a way to check the modem to see if it works w/o having a SSB at hand.

Charlie - Your best bet is probably to contact someone in your local amateur radio club who's active in digital communications (like Winlink) and ask for their help. They're likely to have the radio gear to hook up your Modem to test it out.

Try the contact info on the Nevada County Amateur Radio Club website for help Welcome to the Nevada County Amateur Radio Club - W6DD

I don't know of any way other than on the air to thoroughly test the modem (without a whole lot of expensive test equipment)

Regards,
Bill

Thanks Bill:

I thought of that idea an hour after I had written the post but didn't get as far as finding the amateur radio club itself. I appreciate the link.

If you bought the one I think you might have bought, it should work fine.
I think the seller seems like a pretty honest sort of person.

Therapy:

Is it the one out of Florida that was sold on Ebay? The seller also had an Icom 710 and a tunner for sale. That is the one that I bought

That is what I figured.
I have met him.
I am sure he would not misrepresent what he is selling.
I can tell you that if I had a boat that needed a SSB I would have bought it all.

That was me.. It has been DHL'd.. It works great and if for some reason it doesn't, I will make it right.

I included a few RF chokes with the cables as well...

Let me know if there are any problems....

Charlie-
I'm sure you could send it directly to Farallon, Pactor's US agents, and ask them to look it over for you, they probably can examine it or tweak it more than someone just trying it out with a radio. That would be the gold standard, so to speak.

Or look at ARRL.ORG for local ham radio contacts and ask some local hams to check it over.

Thanks for the lead Therapy.

Hello Brian nice to meet you. As explained before the problem that I am having is that I can't hook it up to my Icom 710 and test it to make sure that everything works until April. Hearing from you makes me feel more confident. I am actually going in for surgery and will be in recovery from this Thurday till Feb 7th. I wouldn't feel comfortable asking anyone to wait till April to see if something I bought worked. I hope to hear from the local Ham group before I leave. I bet they will have some one to test it. If not Pactor is located in the Bay Area and I go down there every once in awhile.

HS thanks for the lead on where Pactor is located. Sometimes you overlook the obvious. Ask a question before you think and you'll oft feel like a fool when you get the answer.

I guess I didn't have a very good grasp of the obvious. LOL

You to Charlie.. I bet you will be able to get it tested at the Ham shop as well.. I got a lot of my SSB stuff at a Ham place when I lived in FLL and they were great..

Keep me posted.
