No, cannot agree Weaver. Guinness is not a great beer. It is a great stout, but I do not like stout. Kilkenny however is a different matter, my lady and myself have just finished a six pack of it.

PS. Guinness maybe do make a great beer. I used to be able to get it over here for a short while but have not seen it here for ages. Irish ales are fantastic is my final statement.

I believe if you ever got to live in Ireland (southern) you would become a lover of the leann dubh (Black Beer)
Guinness, the Beamish, and The Murphys.

It does not taste the same outside of Ireland. Real draught Guinness does not travel well.

I lived for a while in a Guinness artisan 2 up 2 down , within shouting distance of St. James Gate , used to drink in Walshes of Stoneybatter ( a real district of Dublin folks) when old man Walshe wouldn't serve women ( he had no snug ) I believe in latter years a bus ran into it and it's no more ( the sex of the driver was not mentioned !)

The bar had proper taps, three taps each with different temperatures of Guinness, so you could have a really creamy pint at marginally below room temperature ( my Grandfather was from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and only ever drank room temperature bottled Guinness and as a boy of 8 , I used to get a little glass of it )

Nowadays the stuff is cooled like the friggin draught horse piss that the " youth " drink.

Guinness is a beer , a dark beer typically called porter , originating in London , in the early 18th century, in Ireland it was produced with different malt types and barley. Resulting in a drink called " plain porter" as in " a pint of plain please, will get you served a guiness anywhere in Dublin"

Guinness used to make a extra stout porter, hence the use, particularly in Ireland of the term " stout " to mean Guinness. But that variant has not been produced in Ireland since 1974.

Thankfully with the closure of park royal in London , the bastard English variant of Guinness is no more and all Guinness in the British isles is brewed in St.James gate using water from the river Liffey ( the germs are rumoured to build up your immune system )

Rumour has it that the independent republic of Cork, has tried to brew equivalents, but little is known about that product and no right thinking dubliner would touch the stuff !!!

I note that the micro breweries in Dubin are producing an extra stout porter to original recipes . Must try in next time

Ps the wife likes brown ale and also Kilkenny , I've tried in in draught form , and it's nice, not so from bottles IMHO.

There's been a huge explosion in speciality ales and beers in recent years, very tasty. Um Um

That's pretty much how I feel about the whole idea ... shoulda left it in my head. Still, there were a few chuckles ... I figure if it makes me LOL, others might at least tolerate an idea if not embrace it with open arms. Coops was very helpful, some might even say complicit. How many beers do I owe you ... you know, altogether?

My thoughts were as StuM noted, a metaphor for how the newer cruisers have entered the sailing scene with not just a lack of regard for the older techniques of boatsmanship but an active disdain for them. Armed with their gold cards and Towboat on speed dial, they praise the gods and fear not, forevermore the Stand-on Vessel.

Peace mates. Beckham doesn't bend 'em everytime.

Been some time since you were there Dave.....I watched Southern Ireland change from a 3rd world country to a greedy grasping recipient of the E.U, money and then collapse from the weight of the greed (not to mention diversion of some of that money)
Only in Ireland..... one politician had part of the motorway built with a small exit which ended at his house! lololol
