Starlink does not and will not have the capacity to serve urban areas, where most people live.

I doubt the retail price will stick around the $1000 mark for long unless this ends up being a lower end phone with extra comms gear. The higher end phones (in terms of display, CPU, etc.) are over that price already.

How much marketshare it gains will depend on both the phone price and the cost of having both cellular and satellite service for it. The service cost is likely to be the killer, as many people's use cases are such that they'd see little benefit for potentially doubling their service costs.

There's definitely a market for it though. Someone who routinely camps or travels in remote areas with minimal cellular coverage has a good chance of finding this worthwhile.

Sorry but your pricing assumption is forgetting who you are dealing with here. Elon Musk will produce a sexier, better and an absolutely price competitive product that will wipe the floor of the competition. The phone companies including Apple will be destroyed just as Tesla has destroyed the internal combustion legacy companies.

The price of the phone has been officially announced.

Did I say that the phone also has solar recharging built into its body.

Sorry to say, but you sound like the executives at GM who blew off Tesla. Now they are in a death spiral and quickly heading for bankruptcy.

The satellite connectivity is for use when you are out of cell tower range. It will normally default to 5G. If in the mountains or high seas. Simply bring out the attachable whip antenna, screw it into the phone and you are now Starlink connected.

And you sound like you think Elon Musk is our lord and savior and any product he produces will automatically be massively superior to anything anyone else has or ever will produce. Starlink is good stuff and has lots of potential, but particularly in the cell phone space, it's not a case of "everything else is now obsolete".

You mean the same guy that destroyed the small truck industry with his electric truck?

Well, I give Elon a bit of slack on his pick up truck release. He has been busy building out car giga factories on 3 continents. His auto production and sales are outrageous now.

The Tesla pick up that is coming will out perform and out compete Ford. The dedicated pick up factory in Texas is nearing completion.

Building a phone is a lot easier for Elon.

Watch and weep. For me I'm selling Apple stock. Just saying.

You don't have to be an Elon fan boy (I dislike him personally) to acknowledge that it's not a valid criticism of a dual 5g/Starlink phone that it won't work in crowded areas. By definition at least in most of the world crowded areas have 5g service and the places you would use the Starlink connection are by definition uncrowded so capacity wouldn't be an issue.

Plenty of valid criticism of Elon and his company's products. No need to shoot down someone who correctly points out an invalid criticism and then engage in the ad hominem attack on them as a fanboy, we should be better than that here.

Thanks for your voice of reason and call for civility. I never attack the messenger. I just deal with facts and am happy to argue the merits or demerits of points of view. Something has changed in our world. People online these days see nothing wrong in insulting others. So sad.

I don't think so. Legacy internal combustion companies are way behind Tesla in sales of EVs.

What is amazing that Tesla has a profit margin double that of Mercedes and VW. Elon focused on building state of the art robotic mega factories. It is now paying off with volume production capacity outpacing by huge multiples, other EV come lately manufacturers. Tesla is now benefiting from a huge cost to manufacture advantage of everyone else. Sorry but when you analyze legacy IC companies EV production up against Tesla on all macros Tesla is leaving them in the dust.

Couldn't resist, but when has Tesla been price competitive? Their cars may be sexier, and arguably possibly better, but they are certainly not price competitive with their peers in the electric vehicle market. In that sense they are much like Apple, with a devoted following that is willing to pay the extra. Ditto for solar and battery systems. Don't know how to price SpaceX (not being in that industry at all), in that he does seem to have found something that is truly price competitive.

Tesla has only about 2.3% share of the US new car sales.
