What are you talking about? I have exactly zero beef with the boatman. Aside from maybe wanting to eat his brain to get his experience.

Someone named morpheus talked a lot of *** about a couple that fell on hard times, I poked fun at his claim that his ditch bag magically unpacks itself the moment he arrives in port, lamented the tendency of folks to heap *** on fellow sailors who fall on hard times, and I haven't really understood a single thing anyone has said since then, including yourself.

15 kg Rocna on 5/16" chain. I do not believe that is considered oversized for a 32' cruising catamaran.

However, there is very little chance that anchor would drag in that wind if well set with enough scope and a bridle. The anchor load would only be 200-300 pounds (I have tested on a sister ship), which is nothing for that anchor. In sand it should easily hold 10-15 times that much.

The earlier comment about something foul on the bottom sounds reasonable.

What would I have done differently? I'm not interested in arm chairing it.

Im sure the bottom in red hook is absolutely covered in crap from the hurricane. Besides, as we have learned in the keys recently, any knowledge or experience you have with a bottom should be suspect after a major hurricane rolls through because even if the bottom is not covered in trash the bottom structure may very well have changed dramatically.

I'm surprised that they didn't hit another boat or a dock or something before hitting those rocks - that anchorage is crowded. Why anyone would anchor there is beyond me.

I spent almost 2 days in Redhook on a delivery while we made some repairs. Stayed at the nice Marina there. Great fuel dock, a very good grocery store across the street, and a couple hamburger stand bars nearby.

It is not a sheltered refuge! The trades blow directly into it, making everything a lee shore. Ferries and huge sport fishers roar in and out, fighting to get off the dock or get back on due to the winds. Our Boat wrestled with the dock day and night due to the constant, gusty winds and the waves they generate.

I could barely relax at the dock. I cannot imagine relaxing if I was anchored there.

Best wishes to the owners of the boat as they sort out the loss and all the consequent trouble.

From a few of the pictures I saw of the boat breaking up, they were atop some of the only rocks on the beach, right adjacent to what appears to be the mooring/anchoring field in Muller Bay - that limits the potential locations. You can see the pair standing on sand, not far from the wreck. It seems that if they were ~30’-50’ further down the beach, the shallow draft PDQ would have simply been high and dry on the sand when they woke up.
