Oh, better far to live and die
Under the brave black flag I fly,
Than play a sanctimonious part,
With a pirate head, and a pirate heart.
Away to the cheating world go you,
Where pirates all are well-to-do;
But I'll be true to the song I sing,
And live and die a Pirate King.

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness

Being a good person doesn't account for anything! You should be able to judge me solely based on what flag I am flying. This is ridiculous. I am strictly what clothes I wear, what boat I sail in, how often I sail, as well as how big my house is and how fast my car is (which already eliminates some of you!).

I have no interest on meeting people based on common interests and personality because we all know that those things aren't important.

Seriously though, why won't this thread die?

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness

Cruisers are most likely to encounter piracy in the form of pirated electronic/entertainment media in second- or third-world markets. This is the real deal, however, since much pirated software and entertainment media is produced by organized crime groups.

So the lesson is, it may be that it's not the people with the black flags who are supporting piracy -- it's people hunting for cheap entertainment in questionable places.

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness

It seems you could get in more trouble for flying the flag of a Pilot than that of a Pirate.

When Frederic was a little lad he proved so brave and daring,
His father thought he’d ’prentice him to some career seafaring.
I was, alas! his nurserymaid, and so it fell to my lot
To take and bind the promising boy apprentice to a pilot
A life not bad for a hardy lad, though surely not a high lot,
Though I’m a nurse, you might do worse than make your boy a pilot.

I was a stupid nurserymaid, on breakers always steering,
And I did not catch the word aright, through being hard of hearing;
Mistaking my instructions, which within my brain did gyrate,
I took and bound this promising boy apprentice to a pirate.
A sad mistake it was to make and doom him to a vile lot.
I bound him to a pirate – you – instead of to a pilot.

I soon found out, beyond all doubt, the scope of this disaster,
But I hadn’t the face to return to my place, and break it to my master.
A nurserymaid is not afraid of what you people call work,
So I made up my mind to go as a kind of piratical maid-of-all-work.
And that is how you find me now, a member of your shy lot,
Which you wouldn’t have found, had he been bound apprentice to a pilot

Bill
I find that most of the people I meet are orphans, or at least often.

I believe the correctly Nivenesque phrase would be - "the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcoming."

I saw that on TV when it happened, I believe that was scripted.
