Article on outboard motor thefts

I think most of the motors described here are probably larger than what we sailors might use as kickers or dinghy motors [for instance, the 41 motors stolen from the dealer in the lead paragraphs of the article were said to be worth $700,000, or about $17,000 each on average], but there are some interesting stats in the article:

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/30/orga...t-engines.html

"Florida, which ranks as the top state for boat thieves, does keep track of engine thefts. A CNBC analysis of records compiled by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Division shows a total of 811 engine thefts in 2016 compared with 643 in 2015. About half the stolen engines were Yamahas."

Re: Article on outboard motor thefts

I made the mistake of leaving my Yamaha 4hp locked in its usual spot on the rear seat rails while I was bottom painting in the boatyard over a weekend. Bolt cutter made short work one night. After discussion with the boatyard, they compensated with a free haulout. Insurance adjustor told me that the vast number of thefts were of small portables and, in his 20+ year history he could count the number recovered on one hand.
