Insurance in Caribbean

Looking at liability insurance for areas other than Canada and U.S. Most likely for areas Cuba and Bahamas. The rates here in Canada are high. Do marinas in these areas want proof of insurance? How many cruise here without insurance? Thanks for info, Colin...

We didn't spend that much time in marinas in the eastern Caribbean, but when we did, we were never asked for proof of insurance. However, when laying up the boat ashore for hurricane season, the boatyards wanted proof of liability insurance.

My boat was insured for US East coast and Gulf of Mexico

They asked only 100$ for one year to add the bahamas in the coverage.

Our marina in St Martin does require us to show proof of insurance. Because we have cruised Cuba and Haiti we have to go with a "non-American" carrier. Our broker is Blue Water Insurance out of Jupeter FL. Also, we leave the boat in St Martin, in the water year around and I did not want to have to move the boat outside the hurricane box (St Martin certainly seems as safe as the Texas gulf coast after Ike tore us up in 2008). Our carrier is Lemma out of the Ukraine. They are supposedly AA rated. Lloyds is involved in the placement also. We have been with Blue Water for 15 years and they have always been great (although we have never had a claim).

This is very good info would you mind sharing your coverage limits and premiums? We will be looking for carribbean coverage and will want an agreed value policy in addition to liability. 43' Wauquiez.

We carry $160,00 hull, $5000 medical, $10000 personal effects, $500000 liability, $25000 uninsured boater, $5000 tender and outboard, $100000 pollution. The premium is $3866. Boat is an old 1984 Vagabond 42 that has been lavished with a ridiculous amount of attention and money. We have quite a bit more into her than the hull value but that is all she will survey for.

Wow thanks that is very helpful. I traded a few emails with someone from Isis and It sounded like I should expect about 2-3% of hull value in premium. Not likely that my boat will survey out at much more than 100k and my budget won't support much more than 2500 a year for insurance so we will probably not be getting coverage limits like you. Thanks a lot for sharing this info it has been very helpful.

So I guess I should take my 2100$ insurance quote for my 46 ft cat, hurricane, named storm includded. 4500 deductible and double in the case of hurricane or named storm though.

There is a great company in London UK called Yachtline they offer a Lloyd's policy for yachts in the Caribbean.
